PAUL TYLER, BARON TYLER

'Paul Archer Tyler, Baron Tyler', CBE, DL (born 29 October 1941) is a Liberal Democrat politician in the United Kingdom. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from February–October 1974 and from 1992 to 2005, and now sits in the House of Lords as a life peer.
At the 1970 general election, Tyler stood as the Liberal Party candidate in the Bodmin constituency, defending the seat held by the outgoing Liberal MP Peter Bessell. However, he lost to the Conservative Party candidate Robert Hicks.
At the February 1974 general election, Tyler defeated Hicks by a majority only 9 votes.[1] However, at the October election that year, Hicks regained the seat with a majority of 665.[2] Tyler stood again at the 1979 general election, but Hicks was re-elected with a large majority.
After standing in the 1982 Beaconsfield by-election, he did not contest the general elections in 1983 and 1987, but returned to Parliament after an 18 year absence, at the 1992 general election, when he was elected as Liberal Democrat Member for North Cornwall. He was a member of the Liberal Democrats' shadow cabinet until he retired from the House of Commons at the May 2005 general election. Dan Rogerson was selected by the local Liberal Democrats to succeed him.
On 13 May 2005 it was announced that he would be created a life peer, and on 16 June 2005 he was created 'Baron Tyler', of Linkinhorne in the County of Cornwall. He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall in February 2006.
