According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,634 km² (631 mi²). 1,605 km² (620 mi²) of it is land and 29 km² (11 mi²) of it (1.80%) is water.

History


Peoria County was formed in 1825 out of Fulton County. It was named for the Peoria, an Illiniwek people who lived there.

Demographics



As of the census² of 2000, there were 183,433 people, 72,733 households, and 47,130 families residing in the county. The population density was 114/km² (296/mi²). There were 78,204 housing units at an average density of 49/km² (126/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 79.38% White, 16.10% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.66% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 2.09% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 72,733 households out of which 29.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.60% were married couples living together, 12.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.20% were non-families. 29.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the county the population was spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $39,978, and the median income for a family was $50,592. Males had a median income of $40,840 versus $25,335 for females. The per capita income for the county was $21,219. About 10.00% of families and 13.70% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.50% of those under age 18 and 7.10% of those age 65 or over.
