PHILIP LIEBERMAN
'Philip Lieberman' is a linguist at Brown University. Originally trained in phonetics, he wrote a dissertation on intonation. The remainder of his career has focussed on topics in the evolution of spoken language, and particularly the relationship between the evolution of the vocal tract and the evolution of speech and language. His work on language abilities of extinct hominids stimulated considerable interest in this in this field.
Lieberman later became interested in photography and mountaineering, and has published on mountaineering in Switzerland.
He currently holds an endowed chair in the Department of Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences at Brown University, and is also a professor in the Department of Anthropology. In the 1970s he was a professor of linguistics at the University of Connecticut and a research scientist at Haskins Laboratories.
