PHILIP STANHOPE, 1ST EARL OF CHESTERFIELD

'Philip Stanhope, 1st Earl of Chesterfield' (1584 - September 12 1656), son of Sir John Stanhope and his wife Cordell Allington, was an English aristocrat.
He was knighted in 1605 by James I, and in the same year married Catherine Hastings (d. 1636), daughter of Francis Hastings, Lord Hastings. They had eight children:

★ Hon. John Stanhope (bur. 27 July 1623)

Henry Stanhope, Lord Stanhope (d. 29 November 1634)

★ Hon. Michael Stanhope (1624–1648)

★ Hon. Ferdinando Stanhope (d. 1643), married Lettice Ferrers and had issue he was an M.P. he had three children

★ Hon. Philip Stanhope (d. 27 October 1645)

★ Hon. Arthur Stanhope (b. 1617), died 1677, married Anne Salisbury and had issue. Rebuilt most of Shelford. Was M.P. for town of Nottingham They had four children

★ Lady Sarah Stanhope (d. May 1698), married Sir Richard Hoghton, 3rd Baronet

★ Lady Elizabeth Stanhope, married Edward Darcy

★ Hon. Edward Stanhope born 1607, died 1614
In 1616, Stanhope was created Baron Stanhope of Shelford, and was further elevated as Earl of Chesterfield in 1628. After the death of his first wife, he married Anne Pakington, by whom he one son:

★ Hon. Alexander Stanhope (1638–1707), diplomat, married Catherine Burghill and had issue: Mary (c1686-1762) who married Viscount Fane; and James who was the soldier-statesman first Earl Stanhope (1673-1721).

★ Hon. Charles Stanhope born 1607, died 1645
Chesterfield was succeeded by his grandson, also named Philip.

★ Hon. William Stanhope (b.1608, died 1614)
★ Hon. George Stanhope, (b. 1610, died 1616)
