PINDARI DAM
'Pindari Dam' is a dam and reservoir in New South Wales, east of the town of Ashford and north of Inverell. The main purposes of the dam are water storage for agricultural purposes and use in the cotton industry. However it is also used for public recreation such as fishing and water sports. Boat ramps are present. There are also camping, caravan and picnic facilities.
Pindari Dam is located on the Severn River, named after the Aboriginal word for 'high rocks'. The name was used for an early pastoral run near the dam. Pindari Dam was the first major conservation storage to be built in northern NSW, commencing in 1967 and being completed in 1969. It has a storage capacity of 312,000 million litres, a catchment area of 1994 square kilometres, a surface area of 10.5 square kilometres, and a maximum water depth of 85 metres.
Recreation activities include bushwalking, picnicking, sailing, swimming, fishing and waterskiing. The foreshore park is a popular local picnic site and camping area on a crown reserve, managed by Inverell Shire Council. There is a lookout on the main dam wall.
Recreation facilities include a boat ramp, barbecues, bush shelter sheds and tables and toilets.
