'Pittsburg County' is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population was 43,953. Its county seat is McAlester6.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,569 km² (1,378 mi²). 3,382 km² (1,306 mi²) of it is land and 186 km² (72 mi²) of it (5.22%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 43,953 people, 17,157 households, and 11,941 families residing in the county. The population density was 13/km² (34/mi²). There were 21,520 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 77.20% White, 4.02% Black or African American, 12.50% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 5.20% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 16.7% were of American, 11.3% Irish, 10.0% German, 8.5% English and 5.4% Italian ancestry according to Census 2000.
There were 17,157 households out of which 29.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% were married couples living together, 11.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% were non-families. 27.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 17.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 101.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $28,679, and the median income for a family was $35,190. Males had a median income of $28,470 versus $19,886 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,494. About 13.60% of families and 17.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.70% of those under age 18 and 13.30% of those age 65 or over.
