PITTSBURGH TRI-STATE
The 'Pittsburgh Tri-State' is the U.S. region that is centered around the transportation, medical, academic, economic, media and federal resources based in Pittsburgh. It roughly covers east-central Ohio, much of the Northern areas of West Virginia (if not the entire state) and all of western Pennsylvania and some of central Pennsylvania. The county of Garrett, Maryland, the westernmost part of the state, is also largely considered part of the Pittsburgh Tri-State area.
The area is an extension of the Pittsburgh DMA and the Pittsburgh Metro Area both officially designated areas covering area of Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia. Although including areas that are mostly autonomous in their own right such as Youngstown-Sharon, Steubenville-Wheeling-Weirton and Erie-Meadville, the Pittsburgh Tri-State is united in the fact that many cable systems carry Pittsburgh-based media, Pittsburgh sports teams have affiliate radio as well enjoying the primary fanbases, the areas use the Pittsburgh International Airport as their major gateway to the world, and Pittsburgh hospitals such as Allegheny General and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as their resource for major surgery or trauma. Pittsburgh television affilates and FSN Pittsburgh (with exclusive rights to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Pirates and many Pittsburgh Steelers and Pitt Panthers shows) network reach also displays the limit to regional Pittsburgh.
It can also be defined through the federally designated areas served by the Pittsburgh district of the Army Corps of Engineers, the Pittsburgh branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, the FBI and several other federal and national organizations.
Among the other Pittsburgh area colleges and universities are the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Carlow University, Chatham University, Duquesne University, Franciscan University of Steubenville, La Roche College, Point Park University, Robert Morris University, Saint Vincent College, Seton Hill University, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, California University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, West Virginia University, Geneva College, Westminster College,Washington & Jefferson College, and Waynesburg College.
