'PlayRadioPlay!' is a one-man electronic/pop band from Aledo, Texas started by 17 year old Daniel Hunter in his garage. He graduated early from Aledo High School after signing with Island/Stolen Transmission midway through his senior year.^[1][2]
Daniel Hunter makes his music with Propellerheads Reason, Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and various other electric and acoustic instruments to create an upbeat, dancy, yet lyrically intelligent style of music. He writes, performs, and records all of his own music. The sound can be compared to The Postal Service, Hellogoodbye, and other electronic acts, although it has staunch differences. PlayRadioPlay! released an EP entitled "The Frequency EP" on April 27th, 2007, which debuted at number 6 on Billboard's Electronic chart. A full length album is underway and the release is scheduled for 2008.

The Beginning

PlayRadioPlay! began when Daniel Hunter posted demos on MySpace and Purevolume as free downloads. After this led to internet exposure, he toured with The Scene Aesthetic, , and Peachcake in the Summer of 2006. He also played shows with Showbread, Royden, Sullivan, Eisley, MC Chris, Gym Class Heroes, Fall Out Boy, Anberlin, Daphne Loves Derby, Jonezetta, Liam and Me, and fellow Island Records acts, Young Love and Under The Influence of Giants. For his first several months of performing in front of live audiences, he performed alone with a backing track running off of his Apple Powerbook G4 laptop, occasionally in addition to an electric guitar, specifically, a Fender Telecaster through an Orange Rockerverb 50 Head.

MySpace and Record Deal

PlayRadioPlay has over 2.8 million views, 8 million plays, and 85,000 friends on MySpace. This made PlayRadioPlay! one of the best-known unsigned bands in the world until PlayRadioPlay! signed to Stolen Transmission Records, a subsidary of Island Records (Fall Out Boy, The Killers, U2, Mariah Carey) in November 2006. PlayRadioPlay! released an EP entitled "the Frequency E.P." on April 27th, 2007, which debuted at number 6 on Billboard's Electronic chart.

Influences

Musical Influences

Although PlayRadioPlay!'s sound is most often compared to that of the various similar upbeat electronic acts, Dan lists a variety of bands of different genres as his musical influences/favorite bands on his MySpace, amongst them ''The Arcade Fire'', ''Muse'', ''Radiohead'' and ''Smashing Pumpkins''.

Lyrical Influences

Dan has spoken openly in interviews about several difficulties in his past, including the death of his father, depression, drug addiction, and 4 months in a rehabilitation center during his sophomore year of high school. Many of his song lyrics reflect these darker times in a much more positive light.
"Even Fairy Tale Characters Would Be Jealous", for instance, is a fast tempo dance tune about his 4 months in rehab, and replacing drug addiction with a safer kind of "high."
A line from "Confines of Gravity," one of his most recent songs from the Frequency E.P., also references his previous drug use and reads "I want to be an Astronaut and get high."
"Without Gravity" is a slower song about the death of his father, and the downward spiral he entered after this traumatic experience.
Several of his songs are also based on or written for his girlfriend, Madison McDaniel.

Straight-Edge

Dan states explicitly in the About Me section of his MySpace that he is Straight edge, meaning he chooses not to participate in the consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, and casual sex.
