PORTICI

'Portici' is a city (''comune'') in Campania, Italy, in the Province of Naples, situated 8 km (5 miles) southeast of Naples, on the shores of the bay and at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. The palace, erected in 1738, is traversed by the high road. It once contained the antiquities from Herculaneum, now removed to Naples, and since 1882 it has been a government school of agriculture. There is a small harbor. Just beyond Portici, on the south east, is Resina, on the site of the ancient Herculaneum, with several fine modern villas. The inhabitants are engaged in fishing, silk-growing and silk-weaving. The city was completely destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631, but was rebuilt. As of the Italian census of 2001, the city had a population of 60,218 inhabitants. The city's land area is 4.52 km², resulting in a population density of 13,322.57 / km², the most densely populated ''comune'' in Italy.
