PRASUN MUKHERJEE

'Prasun Mukherjee' (1950-) the current Commissioner of Police in the city of Kolkata (Kolkata Police), West Bengal, India. He is an IPS officer. Recently he was elected President of the Cricket Association of Bengal. [1]

Early Life


Born in 1950, he earned a degree in Mathematics from Patna University and entered the IPS in 1973, where he was allotted the West Bengal Cadre.

He took over as the Police Commissioner on 30th November, 2004. He has also held the post of Secretary of the IPS Officers' Association of West Bengal for eight years in two stints.

Interests


Mukherjee is interested in wildlife and nature conservation, and was one of the founder members of the NGO ''Nature Environment & Wildlife Society'' (NEWS), Calcutta in 1992. He has been the President of NEWS since 1996 and the organisation has grown to become one of the leading NGO's working in this field. Mukherjee is also the Editor-in-Chief of the NEWS's quarterly colour magazine `ENVIRON', focusing on conservation of wildlife & nature.
Mukherjee has been the President of the West Bengal Athletic Association for the past three years, during which time he encouraged the involvement of sports-persons and corporate sector personalities in supporting the activities of athletes.

Career


As police commissioner of Kolkata in 2004, he was praised for changing the work ethic of the organisation[2].
As the City Commissioner of Police, his main focus has been generating people-friendliness in his 26,000 strong force, besides bringing in professionalism and introducing modern scintific methods of policing. Some of the achievements of Kolkata Police during his tenure have been - an increase in the visibility of policemen on the streets, better fleet management through an increase in patrol cars, introduction of night policing through the installation of 86 conspicuous manned Kolkata Police Assistance Posts at almost every alternate street crossing in the city, an improvement in traffic control resulting in faster movement of traffic.
In recent times, there has been a spate of outreach programmes by Kolkata Police. The Nabadisha Programme encourages children from under-privileged sections of society to join schools that are jointly managed by 48 Police Stations of the Kolkata Police and a number of NGOs. Children also participate in sporting events like the annual Friendship Cup Para (Neighbourhood) Football Tournament, and boxing, shooting competitions. Mukherjee believes that this will reduce the number of children turning to crime.
