The 'President of Romania' is the head of state of
Romania. The President is directly elected by a
two-round system for a five-year term (since 2004, after the
Constitution was modified in 2003). He or she can serve two terms. During his term in office, the
President must not be a member of any
political party.
The current President of Romania is
Traian Băsescu.
Head of State
The people of Romania have not been given the opportunity democratically to vote on whether they support the presidential system in Romania. The legitimate constitutional monarchy was overthrown in
December 1947 by the Communist regime. After this Communist regime was overthrown in
December 1989 no referendum was held to determine the system of government wanted by the people of Romania. The current constitutional crisis has occurred due to a difference in opinion between a political Head of State, the President, and the Parliament.
