PROASTIO, PATRAS

'Proasteio' or 'Proastio' (Greek, Modern: Προάστιο), older forms: 'Proasteion' and 'Proastion'' also with an an accented is a neighbourhood in the northern part of the city of Patras, 6 km from the downtown core. It is linked with a road linking the GR-8A/E55 (Athens - Corinth - Patras) along with the GR-5 and the GR-48 for the northbound lanes and the GR-8 (Panepistimiou Street and its beach, a road with Afstralias Avenue and a road to Kastellokampos and Rio. The OSE's SPAP line runs in the middle and its length is approximately 3 to 4 km. The Charadros flows 1 km north. The municipal boundary with Rio is also to the north.
The farmlands are to the central part, residential homes are by the Ionian Sea and by the new highway to the east. Its total area is approximately 7 to 8 km² and 2 km in length from west to east and 3 to 3.5 km in width from north to south. Proasteio was entirely rural and had settlements and rural houses. Forests dominated the western part, by the river and in mixed areas. The areas compromised with olive groves and pastures as well as fruits, vegetables and other crops including tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, onions, watermelons, melons and others. In the late-1960s, the new GR-8A (Athens - Corinth - Patras) was under construction and opened to traffic in 1969. Housing developments arrived in the 1970s and the 1980s and it generated a large population growth that were building by the coast and by the highway. Shops were added in large numbers. Electricity arrived during the 1960s, television and radio in the late-20th century and a pedestrian traffic light to the east. Traffic lights were added in the 1970s and another in the late-1990s.
Proasteio has a few schools, a lyceum (secondary school), a gymnasium (high school) and a few churches. It has also a several gas station in the east.
