Performing arts and athletics

PHS possesses an abundance of programs in its performing arts department, all of which are highly esteemed by the teachers, administration and other outside sources.
Soccer

The Provo High boys soccer is divided into two teams; Varsity - coached by Cesar Aswipé Cardoso, founder and sole member of the Provo Brasilian League of Champions and assisted by Brian D. Smith - and Junior Varsity - coached by Chad Nichols, Brian J. Smith, & Richard Bradley.
The boys varisty team took 3rd place in the state this past year thanks to the hard work and expert training of Cesar Aswipé Cardoso.
Speech and Debate

For students interested in a future in forensic study, it has been a a hard road, yet they have done particularly well in various events, and have even had the opportunity to travel to Stanford University in the year 2007 for a tournament. The team is excited to have Miss Bates take over for 2007-08.

Choir

The PHS choir department is managed by Cory Mendenhall. The choir department is composed of four choirs: A beginning SATB choir is an open enrollment class, and works as a starter for getting into the program. The other three choirs are audition only choirs. There is an Advanced Women's Chorus (AWE)
comprised of female voices, usually anywhere from 30-40 members. There is also a Chamber Choir, a 30 member choir with eight tenors, eight altos, seven sopranos, and seven basses, referred to as "PHS Singers." The largest choir is the Concert Choir, ranging from anywhere to 88-110 members.
Drama

The current drama teacher at Provo High is Bob Bauer. The 2006-2007 school year is his second year teaching at PHS. During the '05-'06 year, Bauer directed both the school's musical, ''Beauty and the Beast'', and ''The Servant of Two Masters.'' The '06-'07 musical was ''The Pirates of Penzance'' and ''The Comedy of Errors'' will show April 26-28 of the same year.
The previous Drama teacher was Susan Anderson. Some plays/musicals under her direction were ''The Scarlet Pimpernel'', ''You Can't Take it With You'', and ''South Pacific''.
Ballroom

Angela Williams is the current ballroom dance instructor and has been since the year 2000. Her first year at Provo High School she made a Mission Impossible II themed Latin Medley and with the success of it at the National Dancesport Championships the next year became the biggest tryout for the ballroom team ever making it impossible to have just one team and so the team were split up into one Junior Varsity Team and one Varsity team.
The next year more medleys were formed. For the JV team they have a "hip hop" themed Latin medley and the Varsity had a Africa Latin medley and a Fosse Standard medley. The Latin medley consisted of 5 Latin dances: Paso Doble, Jive, Rumba, Cha Cha and Samba. The Standard Medley consisted of 5 standard dances, Waltz, Quickstep, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. That year at the National Dancesport Championships, the ballroom team took 1st place in the state. The next year the program kept getting bigger and an assistant ballroom coach was needed to take over the JV team, Sean Farris. That year the JV team got a new Hip Hop Latin medley and the Varsity team got a new Goria Estafan Latin Medley. Again the school took first in the state.
The next year a new Junior Varsity coach was hired, Tiave Matagi, and they got a standard medley for the first time themed "Hans Zimmer". The Varsity Team placed First high school Latin Medley in the nation and 2nd in Standard, they also took 1st place in the state championship. They plan on continuing to take first. The company has also traveled to Las Vegas, Provo and Idaho Falls and more for ballroom competitions and its alum have gone onto be part of the UVSC and BYU dance teams.
Band

The band program at PHS is directed by Jared Hearld. Some band ensembles at PHS include Philharmonic Orchestra (which includes strings), Percussion, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Pep Band, and the fall and summer Marching Bands. The Wind Ensemble is the highest performing classical ensemble of the bands, and descends in the order of Symphonic and then Concert. The Jazz Band has received state and nationwide recognition, and is the most advanced instrumental musical group in the school. This past season (2006), the Marching Band took third place in the 3A category at ISU and took home an "Outstanding Percussion" award, which christened their drumline as the best in the states of Utah and Idaho.
Basketball

Provo High has won more Utah state championships than any other school]. PHS won the state basketball championship in 1941, '44, '45, '56, '73, '74, '78, '81, '83, '85, '87, '95, '97, '98, '04 and '07.[1] The team is coached by Craig Drury, one of the winningest coaches in Utah history and also the arch nemesis of Provo High School Soccer Coach Cesar Aswipé Cardoso. The basketball team's latest State Championship was in the 2006-2007 season. Led by Chris Collinsworth and Sean Thorton, they defeated the Payson Lions 43-37.
Local Music

Provo High is also home to several bands, including The Negatives, Better Than Pelé, Fantastic Floor, Q-com and the JT Empire, The Virtual Pandas, The Cursing Cardi's and Swoven.

PHS-BYU partnerships

Due to its close proximity to Brigham Young University, Provo High has long operated as an informal local training ground for BYU's student teachers. From 1996 to 1999, PHS and BYU entered into a formal partnership with two primary goals: to improve the student teacher program and to work at retaining ninth grade students, who are statistically most likely to drop out of school.[1]
