PUTIGNANO

Province of Bari

'Putignano' is a town and comune in the province of Bari, Puglia, Italy. The ''comune'' has a land area of 99.11 km² (38.27 sq mi).
It is one of the main cities of the region. Its population at the 2001 census was 28,176 inhabitants and the economic activity is quite important. In the past the economy of the city was principally based on agriculture, but soon the population converted the rural village into a industrial center. Many open-minded families have then built many companies from the scratch, some of them representing today important market players in industries such as Foods (Taralli are one example), wedding and children dresses.
Putignano is well known because of the Carnival, considered one of the main carnivals in Italy.
It is the oldest (dated from 1394) and longest italian carnival. It starts the day after Christmas and finishes the day before the ash Wednesday. There are four Carnival parades, 3 on the last month's Sundays and one in the evening of the last day of carnival (shrove Tuesday).
The name of the city has also been given to an asteroid (7665 Putignano) of the solar system.
