The 'Atlanta Knights' (later 'Quebec Rafales' [''rafales'' being French for "winds"]) were an International Hockey League franchise from 1992-93 through 1996-97. The team moved for the 1996-97 IHL season due to the impending arrival of an Atlanta NHL franchise (Atlanta Thrashers) and the loss of The Omni as an arena.
The team drew really well in 1996-1997 in Quebec City, playing in Le Colisee one year after the NHL Quebec Nordiques moved to Colorado. The next year, after trading some of their best players, such as goaltender Stephane Beauregard, the team didn't reach the postseason. The owners did not realize the expected profit and folded the team after only two seasons in Quebec.
While the Atlanta Knights, the franchise won the 1994 Turner Cup. The Knights featured the first professional African American head coach in John Paris, Jr.. The Knights were also the first professional team to play a female goalie, Manon Rheaume, in a regular-season game.
The Atlanta Knights name has again resurfaced as an expansion Junior hockey team established in May 2007. The Atlanta Knights Junior Hockey Club is a sanctioned USA Hockey Junior hockey team, registerd to participate in the South Eastern Junior Hockey League. The Atlanta Knights Junior Hockey Club is the first fully affiliated junior hockey team ever established in Atlanta. The team is locally owned by the Falkenstein Family Foundation with games hosted at Blueland at the MIC. The team plays a competitive 45 game season, including regional and national venues.
