RAHUL EASWAR
'Rahul Easwar' (born in a Kerala Brahmin family) is a media personality and author living in Kerala, India. He was working in a Malayalam TV channel ''Kiran TV''. Even though it was mainly dedicated to music, it also had a serious philosophy based programme called "Good Morning Kiran". The topics are political, social and philosophical in nature with Rahul Easwar as the anchor of the programme. Recently it is reported that he moved into another malayalam channel Kairali. He also takes sessions of corporate training, philosophy and lifology.
He is also the grandson of Supreme Priest of Sabarimala Kantararu Maheshwararu. He was the spokesperson for Sabarimala and for the priests when the Jaimala Controversy and Tantri controversy happened. Even though he is a well respected media person, he was vehemently attacked by media for defending tradition of Sabarimala of not allowing women to enter. The Tantri Case is now under the Kerala High court and the case regarding 'whether women can enter' is now in the Supreme court of India.
When many feminist organisations and other sections demanded the entry for women in Sabarimala, he was all over the Indian media countering the argument and claiming that 'Sabarimala temple's philosophy is the philosophy of celibacy and keeping out woman for creating a 'psychological space'. It was again considered by many as religious discrimination against women. An editorial was written against Sabarimala and Rahul Easwar in Hindustan Times. The national media also took different stances, some criticising him and some appreciating the way in which he handled such a sensitive issue. His admirers see him as the efficient orator who could positively influence the course of Sabarimala controversies and his critics blame him for preserving milleniums old tradition and saving the Tantri who was caught under suspicious circumstances. He also ran into heated debates with his remarks on 'reservation policy', when he openly attacked caste based reservation and quota policy of the Indian government.
Recently he was also the face and voice of the 'sanctity' of religion in the Guruvayoor - Yesudas controversy. Rahul was once again in strong defense of the power and discretion of Guruvayoor Tantri in allowing or not allowing people of other faiths. Both Rahul Easwar and K.J Yesudas were guests in interviews on CNN-IBN and Times Now. It was in one of these interviews Rahul famously remarked, "just because something is going on for centuries, it need not be right; But remember just because something is going on for centuries, it need not be wrong TOO". He went on "nowadays media and pseudo-modernists make it a fashion of criticising past; remember there is not future for humanity if we cannot learn and correct from past". He is seen my many national media as a person who is bridging past and future.
In another television news interview, he was one of three guests along with Sukumar Azhikode and Kerala Minister G.Sudhakaran. The interview witnessed verbal attacks between Rahul Easwar and G.Sudhakaran and it ended in the fight between them. But many of his admirers point out to his impartiality by saying that it was him who first appreciated the minister when he brought out the controversial Devasom Bill by saying "more than the corrupt believer, god likes the truthful communist".
Many people also raise severe objections to him as a person and his philosophical view point. He is regarded by his critics as a person who is 'renegade' and some criticise him for his 'fascination' with the past. His critics consider him as an efficient orator who often resort to extreme views. He also humorously called Barkha Dutt a 'fundamentalist feminist and terrorist' in her show 'We the People'.
He was again an opinion maker in the national media in the recent Guruvayoor controversy regarding the entry of non-hindus into temples. He is seen in the media as the architect of the 'Second Temple Entry Proclamation'. Easwar was coordinating the Tantris and Brahmins of Kerala to allow the entry of all believers irrespective of cast and religion into temple. He was in the media taking the initiative and presenting 'Second Temple Entry Proclamation'. He was well appreciated by political class and media for his efforts of reforming and redefining the religion and traditions in Kerala. The movement is only on its initial stage and was extensively covered and appreciated by the press.
Speaking to NDTV about his initiative to reform, he said ''We really want to change the law. But many people sadly or superficially want to break the law and not go deep and change"
"This would mean issuing a new Temple Entry Proclamation like the one that was issued almost a century ago, allowing lower castes to enter. This one would lift the ban on entry of different religions."
"Twelve hundred years ago, another Malayalee, Sree Sankaracharya, set the temple traditions all over India. Maybe we can redefine the temple traditions as such to accommodating modernity. During the time of Sankaracharya, there were hardly any Muslims, Christians and other religions, so he couldn't accommodate them. That 1200 years later we could think of accommodating them, Sabarimala is the best example,'' added Easwar.
Rahul Easwar was arrested for conducting a 'pooja' in front of Kerala Secretariat. He was also taking into preventive custody a day before by the Kerala government. There was an allegation that it was a plot by the government to prevent the pooja the next day. But the other version tells that there were problems and arguments which happend in the Ministers office and it led to the arrest. He was arrested near the accountant general's office in the capital city of Kerala. According to the media reports, he was protesting against the Devasom Minister G.Sudhakaran alleging that his statements were hurting the sentiments of Hindu religious beliefs and Brahmin community. There were media reports both supporting and opposing Easwar. Also some organisations like NSS, SNDP, Hindu Aikyavedi condemned the arrest. Rahul Easwar's fights with the minister Sudhakaran were making news across the state of Kerala. Their fights have been seen by many on the background of the fight between religion and communism and even the national media took keen interest in them.
His other profile is of an orator, educationalist and corporate trainer. His higher studies was in philosophy and psychology. He has also authored 2 books, 'The Philosophy of Philosophy' and 'The Philosophy of Vedanta'
