REGISTERED PORT
'Registered port' numbers are network ports in the range 1024-49151 (out of a range of 216 = 65536). They can be registered to certain protocols by software companies, similar to the way domain names are registered.
Since March 21, 2001 the registry agency is ICANN, before that time it was IANA.
Port numbers beneath the registered range are called ''well-known port numbers'', port numbers beyond the registered range are called ''dynamic / private ports''.
