Love and Authentication -- Addressing the problem of password reset
Google Tech Talks August 12, 2008 ABSTRACT Abstract: One of the most commonly neglected security vulnerabilities associated with typical online service providers lies in the password reset process. By being based on a small number of questions whose answers often can be derived using data-mining techniques, or even guessed, many sites are open to attack. To exacerbate the problem, many sites pose the very same questions to users wishing to reset their forgotten passwords, creating a common "meta password" between sites: the password reset questions. At the same time, as the number of accounts per user increases, so does the risk for the user to forget her password. Unfortunately, the cost of a customer-service mediated password reset, currently averaging $22, is far beyond possible for most service providers. In this talk, an alternative technique will be presented. It is fast and efficient, is compatible with input-constrained devices (such as handheld devices), and has low error rates. It is in the process of being commercialized, with a Fortune 500 company intending to deploy it Q1'09. An overview of the proposed system is available at www.I-forgot-my-password.com, and a demo at www.Blue-Moon-Authentication.com Speaker: Markus Jakobsson Dr. Markus Jakobsson is Principal Scientist at Palo Alto Research Center. He is a founder of the security startup RavenWhite, which addresses security problems associated with authentication, malware and click-fraud. He is also one of the founders of SecurityCartoon, an educational approach targeting typical Internet users. Previously, he has held positions as Associate Professor at Indiana University, Adjunct Associate Professor at New York University, Principal Research Scientist at RSA Security, and member of the Technical Staff at Bell Labs. He is a visiting research fellow of the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG). Dr. Jakobsson's recent books Phishing and Countermeasures(Wiley, 2006) and Crimeware: Understanding New Attacks and Defenses (Symantec Press, 2008) chart new territory in online security. He received his PhD from University of California at San Diego in 1997.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi - Join the Rest Getting Involved Daily
Here's what you can do: http://uscampaignforburma.org/action/action.html The name of this outstanding song is called TUNNEL by Third Day. Many universities in the United States have joined the peaceful freedom fighters for this important and humanitarian cause. Make sure your university or college is involved. Join as an Individual: Individuals seeking to join the U.S. Campaign for Burma may do so by clicking on the link below: http://uscampaignforburma.org/whatyoucando/getstarted.html U.S. Campaign for Burma 1612 K St, NW Suite #401 Washington, DC 20006 OR Start a Student Chapter: Students can either join as an individual, start their own chapter of USCB. To start a chapter of USCB, just organize your fellow students and send a request for an action pack to info@uscampaignforburma.org. You can either follow the guidelines at your university or participate in our campaigns unofficially. A very cool link with cool people: http://freesuukyi.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma have many joining the cause every single day. It's a worthy cause and one that millions of people in Burma (Myanmar) are begging other people to help them with. Don't think that her 'house' arrest is a pleasant experience. She's isolated, no communication, rarely a visit, and the place is barricaded way behind a wall, fence, barbed wire and guards. Even letting it known you wish to visit her can cause a serious problem, especially if it is a citizen of Burma. My intention is simply to bring awareness. It's very touching, humbling, and heartbreaking when another, of grace, integrity and moral character, requests in a sincere and gentle plea, begging other people to "Please, use your liberty to promote ours". Free Burma and Free Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Coldplay, U2, Bono, Avril Levine, Eric Clapton, Pearl Jam, Damien Rice, and many other people, every day, are becoming aware and joining the cause. Join us, become a peaceful freedom fighter. Make history, make a difference. ************************************ Fact Sheet Bureau of Public Affairs Washington, DC September 19, 2006 Narcotics Trafficking The United States determined this year that the Burmese regime has again "failed demonstrably" to meet international counter narcotics obligations. Burma remains a source of deep concern because it is the second largest producer of illicit opium, and it produces and trafficks Amphetamine Type Substances (ATS). A 2005 U.S. Government survey found 40,000 hectares producing 380 metric tons of potential heroin. Within the Burmese regime and military, there are serious problems of official corruption, complicity, and lack of control over high-level drug traffickers, and amphetamine production and consumption. U.S. counter narcotics assistance was suspended in 1988, when the military regime began suppressing the pro-democracy movement. Trafficking in Persons The United States has designated Burma a Tier 3 country under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act because the regime does not fully comply with the minimum standards to eliminate trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so. Burma trafficks women, children, and men for forced labor and sexual exploitation, both internally and to several Asian countries. The regime's economic mismanagement, human rights abuses, and forced labor policy contribute to Burma's large human trafficking problem. After the regime began arresting opponents of forced labor, the International Labor Organization (ILO) stopped accepting new cases documenting these abuses in Burma. In 2005, the regime imposed new restrictions on all NGOs and international organizations, undermining their ability to care for trafficking victims. The Burmese government uses internal forced labor, with reports of the Burmese Army forcibly enlisting thousands of children. Gotta SPAM problem? Blame AOL, Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo
ZDNet shakes AOL, Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft down for not ending spam... If the four e-mail giants worked together on antispam standards, the rest of the world would have to follow dek: Five years years ago, the e-mail technology providers were telling us that there were no silver bullets to the spam problem and that it would take time before the situation improved. Yet, today, there's more spam and phishers than ever and too many legitimate e-mails are being routed into our junk mail folders. In ZDNet executive editor David Berlind's ninth Technology Shakedown, he blames AOL, Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft for the mess and demands they act now.
