RIVER ROAD AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM
'River Road African American Museum' is a historical museum in Donaldsonville, Louisiana.
After a massive fire destroyed its original location on the Tezcuco Plantation, the River Road African American Museum found a new home in Donaldsonville, Louisiana which is about 15 miles from Baton Rouge. The museum was established by Kathe Hambrick because she felt that the contributions of enslaved Africans and African Americans who lived and worked on the plantations along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans where not being chronicled or preserved. After touring other plantations, she found that tours and historical information either excluded or romanticized plantation life. In an effort to set the record straight, the River Road African American Museum was born.
Within the museum are exhibits about black inventors and jazz musicians from many of Louisiana’s rural locales, as well as artifacts and memorabilia from plantations. The museum provides a venue for important events celebrating African and African American culture and offers informative tours.
