Plot and setting

Story

''Rogue Galaxy'' begins on the planet Rosa with the title hero, Jaster Rogue, a young man with avid dreams of exploring the galaxy. Unfortunately for him, Rosa, despite being a planet on the outskirts of the galaxy, is rife with highly contested natural resources. As a result, the planet has been placed under occupation by the Longardia Commonwealth in order to ostensibly defend it against the Draxian Empire. Its citizens live under their oppressive control and are forbidden from leaving the planet. However, thanks to a few misunderstandings and a series of fortunate events, Jaster is recruited by a gang of space pirates who mistook him for the legendary hunter, Desert Claw, and he joins the crew of the pirate ship Dorgenark along with her captain, Dorgengoa, as they leave Rosa. He will eventually find himself taking part in a galaxy-wide search with the crew for a legendary planet said to hold the secrets of a highly advanced and vanished civilization along with possessing enough wealth to buy the galaxy. But what begins as a simple hunt for the greatest treasure ever known soon turns into much more as the Daytron Corporation and its devious president, Valkog Drazer, join the hunt for the mysterious and much desired planet.

Characters

Party members

A young man residing on the desert planet of Rosa, who dreams of traveling the stars and visiting new worlds. He has a mysterious birthmark on the left side of his face and was raised by his adoptive father, Raul, on Rosa when he was left at the church as a baby. Jaster uses a sword as his main weapon and a pistol as his sub-weapon. He's the main character in Rogue Galaxy.
In the North American release of ''Rogue Galaxy'', Jaster's "Desert Wind" and "Whirlwind" abilities have had their names switched; in the original Japanese version, Desert Wind refers to Jaster's speed-increasing ability and Whirlwind to the special attack.

The daughter of Dorgengoa, captain of the pirate ship Dorgenark and self-styled "King of Pirates", Kisala is a young woman whose cute looks belie her tough demeanor. She befriends Jaster when she meets him aboard the ship. She is actually the daughter of Queen Freidias of Mariglenn, Princess Irieth. She was found by Dorgengoa after Queen Freidias sent her away so that she could grow up in a more peaceful place than the Rune-infested Mariglenn.

The brash and cynical member of the Dorgenark crew, Zegram's pragmatic approach to piracy has put him at odds with the deeds of the rest of the crew, especially after Jaster joins their ranks. Although he appears not to care what the crew does and is focused on stealing as much treasure as they can find, he does have a good heart buried beneath his ruthless exterior.

A female warrior from the forest planet of Juraika. She meets the crew of the Dorgenark when their ship accidentally crashes on her world after becoming damaged. At first, she is not very friendly towards Jaster and his new friends, but she eventually leaves with them to explore the galaxy and bring her experiences back to her people. Although she comes from a comparatively underdeveloped world, Lilika is proud and adaptable to situations and can stand on equal footing with anyone, regardless of their world and upbringing.

A member of the Dorgenark's crew, Simon's stout physique is masked behind a mysterious past and a full suit that hides his features. He is one of the crew that initially mistakes Jaster for the famous hunter, Desert Claw, bringing him to the ship to join in their adventures. His real name is Sho, and he had a wife called Miyoko and a daughter named Chie. He ran away from his family after an accident at his workplace, thinking that they would not want to see his deformed self.

A highly advanced robot and a member of the Dorgenark's crew, he initially mistakes Jaster for the famous hunter, Desert Claw. He is polite in manners and speech and is skilled in hacking into security systems to help the crew get into places they shouldn't be in. Created by Dr. Pocacchio, he also has the memories of Mark, Dr. Pocacchio's deceased son, stored inside him.

A member of the Granshee race, Jupis is one of the galaxy's most brilliant researchers, especially in the field of time/space energy. He becomes a member of the Dorgenark crew in order to escape being arrested for hacking Zerard's mainframe computer. He often overworked himself in his lab and complains after extended runs.

An old soldier who had once been one of Longardia's best, found at 'Angela's Bar' on Vedan. He left the military following an incident that replaced his right arm with a bionic attachment. He is encountered by Jaster and his friends when they arrive on Vedan looking for information and is willing to help them if only to face his past.
Other characters

The stalwart captain of the Dorgenark and the step-father of Kisala, this self styled "King of the Pirates" is on a quest to discover a lost world and has brought together what he believes to be the best that the galaxy has to offer to fulfill his dream. A huge bear of a man, he is a strong leader that believes in his crew, especially when there is treasure involved.

The First Officer of the Dorgenark, Monsha is a talking cat that runs the ship when Dorgengoa is indisposed (i.e. asleep). Sneering and self-satisfied with his own brilliance, he enjoys giving orders while ensuring that the ship runs as smoothly as possible. He is always found on the bridge or by Captain Dorgengoa's side.

President of the Daytron Corporation, the largest company in the galaxy responsible for 70% of all ship construction. He harbors a secret desire to discover a lost world that is said to hold the secret of eternal life. To this end, he has used the resources of his company to seek out any clues as well as engage in unethical experimentation to produce biological weapons to feed the war between Longardia and the Draxian Empire.

Valkog Drazer's voluptuous secretary and yes-girl who handles a lot of Valkog's dirtiest work with ruthless efficiency. She is as cold as her employer and enjoys toying with those that have been hired by her. On the other hand, she's a bit vain and clearly not too interested in Valkog's schemes for their own sake. For her, it's all in a day's work when climbing the corporate ladder.

★ 'Izel'
A scientist of the Daytron Corporation, and also the lead researcher of the Rune, which is used to create most of the biological weapons used to fuel the war between the Longardian Federation and the Draxian Empire. He had a younger brother named Tony, who stays at the Ocean Laboratory on Alistia.

★ 'Seed'
A biologically-engineered (and enhanced) human made by Daytron from the code upon the tablets. He lacks emotion, and obeys his "father" without question. He is a Doppelgänger of Jaster; he has the same face, build, and birthmark, though has different skin tone, voice, clothes, and hair.

★ 'Father Raul'
Raul is Jaster's adoptive father, and a friend of the legendary hunter Desert Claw.

★ 'Miri Rhyza'
Miri is Lilika's younger sister. Years before the game's story started, she was attacked by a beast that killed their mother and struck her blind. Even though she cannot see, she claims to be able to do everything else.

★ 'Qrann Ijiru'
Qrann is a warrior of Burkaqua Village. He cared a lot for Miri, and strongly opposed the villagers' decision to sacrifice her to the Star God. He is later made the leader of the Burkaquan warriors in place of Lilika after she left.

★ 'Alekt Rosencaster'
He is the warden of Rosencaster Prison on Zerard. Behind his role as warden, he is secretly running experiments concerning the Rune, using the prisoners as test subjects, under the orders of the Daytron Corporation.

★ 'Dr. Donald Pocacchio'
Dr. Donald Pocacchio is the scientist who created Steve, and is also the owner of the Starship Factory on Zerard. He had a deceased son called Mark.

★ 'Gale Dorban'
An old friend of Deego's, they used to work together in the Longardian military before they quit. He later on works under Zax Morarty, and is given much control over the mining town of Myna.

★ 'Angela Seas'
She is the barkeep and owner of 'Angela's Bar', located near the Myna Power Station. She is also a friend of both Deego and Gale.

★ 'Burton'
An archeologist that the group meets several times in various ruins. He has no worries about danger and is killed twice, (although he is revived). His pride as an archeologist prevents him from taking treasure, and he slightly resents the pirates due to their occupation.

★ 'Desert Claw'
The legendary hunter Desert Claw is the person who gave Jaster the Desert Seeker, one of the Seven-Star Swords. He is seen following the party throughout the story, assisting them in difficulties. He later revealed himself to be Jaster's father, Mizel Rogue.

★ 'Johanna'
Johanna was one of the descendants of the Star King, a being who is said to have once ruled the entire galaxy. She is Jaster's mother, and also had the same birthmark, which all descendants of the Star King had. She died of a disease that had affected the town where she once lived.

★ 'Queen Freidias'
Freidias is the Queen of Mariglenn and Kisala's mother. She was the one who sealed Mariglenn in another dimension to prevent the Rune eating away at the planet from spreading.

★ 'King Albioth'
Albioth is Kisala's real father. Turned into a beast by Rune, he is forced to serve the Mother of all Rune.

★ 'Arabis'
A rather round man, Arabis was one of the space pirates looking for Eden. Sebastian, his butler, said that while Arabis had enough treasure to live like a king for three lifetimes, he's still not satisfied. His desire for more treasure soon got his ship stranded by a black shadow that had since possessed him, making him attack anyone who came looking for his treasure on the Ghost Ship.

Planets

There are five worlds that the player may initially visit during the main game with a sixth opening up as a part of the central quest. The world of Alistia was added as part of the North American localization, featuring its own quest and challenges. Upon completing the game, an additional area is made available for exploration.
Rosa

The desert planet where the story begins. It has been recently occupied by the Longardian Federation in order to block any possibility of the Draxian Empire's attempt to do the same due of its valuable resources. Its people are restricted from leaving the planet and live under the constant oppression that the Longardians has imposed upon them.

★ 'Places'

★ ''Salgin''
A town located in the middle of the desert, Salgin is the point where the game starts. The town was slightly damaged when it was attacked by the Mark VIII Salamander, a huge beast contolled by Rune that only rarely appears on Rosa. The church where Jaster lives in is located in this town, as well as the Residential Area and the Spaceport.

★ ''Sylvazard Desert''
A dangerous desert that leads to ancient ruins dating back to the era of the Star King. The gate to Eden is located in these ruins, as well as the Labyrinths--Maze of Temptation, Maze of Chaos, and Maze of Decision--where an ancient beast called the Sand Kraken lives.

★ ''Kuje Desert''
A desert that is always shrouded by a sandstorm. Johannasburg, the illusory town, can be found in this desert.

★ ''Johannasburg''
A town that can only be entered by those who had passed the tests given by its inhabitants. Johanna, Jaster's mother, used to live there. When a deadly disease struck the town, she stopped the time of the town so that the disease would stop spreading and that those who are infected by it will not die. Because of fearing the rest of the town would figure out she is not a normal human, she erased all their memories about her. As a result, when the player visits Johannasburg, not a single person seemed to remember her name even though they knew her. However, they still have the feeling of gratitude towards her, and so unknowingly named the town after her.
Juraika

A jungle planet, it is the home to Fire Fruit which is used to create the Booster Oil used in starship engines. Ancient ruins are also found scattered within its jungles and despite the advances found on other worlds, it is home to tribes that have remained rooted in the traditional ways of their people, exiling those that dare to experiment with technology.

★ 'Places'

★ ''Rhyzas Swamp''
A swamp in the forests of Juraika where the Dorgenark crashed on.

★ ''Burkaqua Village''
Village of the Burkaquan tribe, known well for their animosity towards strangers. The village is led by Chief Ugozi lo Burkaqua.

★ ''Star God's Altar''
An altar that the player can reach by climbing a waterfall. Sacrifices to the Star God of the Burkaquans are made there. It is also used for festivals.

★ ''Leo King's Castle''
A castle deep within the ruins of the Juraikan jungle. It is where the Leo King's Piece, one of the three Key Pieces needed to open the gate to Eden, is found.
Zerard

The most advanced computer-controlled planet in the galaxy, it is the home of the Galaxy Corporation which reaches across the Longardian Federation providing information and travel to its citizens. It is the only place where a travel visa may be renewed, allowing ships to dock at planetside ports.

★ 'Places'

★ ''Galaxy Corporation''
The Galaxy Corporation is where the expired Galactic Travel Visa can be renewed. Quarries, a special type of hunt, can be purchased here. Here, the player can claim rewards after completing several sidequests by talking to MIO at the reception table.

★ ''Rosencaster Prison''
A dreadful place where prisoners are often left for dead, and the most secure prison on Zerard. Jaster and group were thrown in here when trying to renew their expired visa after being mistaken to be terrorists.

★ ''Starship Factory''
A factory where starships are assembled and made.

★ ''Gladius Towers''
Two joined towers standing behind the Galaxy Corporation, ruled by the Libra King's twin sons who quarrel over who should succeed their father's throne. Logan, the elder brother, ruled Tower 1; his younger brother, Gazel, ruled Tower 2. The Libra King's Piece can be obtained after defeating both the brothers.

★ ''Insectron Stadium''
The stadium where the Insectron Tournament is held.
Vedan

Home to the galaxy's most productive mines and the headquarters of the Daytron Corporation, its major concerns are currently enforced by the Morarty family under Zax Morarty with Daytron's permission. As a result, it is subject to gangland violence as Morarty soldiers patrol the streets in three piece suits and use tommy-gun fashioned weapons to punish those that stand in their way. It is a world that is also eternally dark on one side and light on the other, giving the impression of eternal twilight within the cities that lie in between.

★ 'Places'

★ ''Myna''
Also called 'the city of eternal night', this is where the player starts off on Vedan. It has two trains running through it, and has a lot of pollution problems. The people of Myna suffered under the rule of Zax Morarty.

★ ''Mineliner Station''
The station where the Mineliner, a train that runs through Vedan, can be found.

★ ''Angela's Bar''
A bar run by Angela Seas, where miners usually go to after a day's hard work. It was later burnt down by a person supposed to be Zax Morarty's son, Junia, and rebuilt again at some later point in the story.

★ ''Rockbelter Mine''
A mine where the Great Tablet necessary to open the gates to Eden was unearthed. Only those who had a Mine ID Pass are allowed to enter.

★ ''Orphans' Hideout''
A place below the dump at Myna where Harry and the orphans live. It is actually a part of Vedan's waterways.

★ ''Cancer King's Ruins''
Located deep in the waterways of Vedan, the Cancer King's piece can be found here.
Alistia

This world was added to the North American release of the title during localization. A world whose surface is mostly covered in water, it is the home to two opposing races: the underwater-dwelling Mermels and the Sleeg on the surface. Despite this, it is considered a resort world thanks to its abundant beaches and natural wonders. It is not immediately open to travel until a certain point in the game is reached.

★ 'Places'

★ ''Lapatia Village''
A village near the Port Baltoness, the spaceport, where the Sleegs live.

★ ''Nalvasa Seaway''
A seaway that stretches from Lapatia Village to the Ocean Laboratory, filled with varied features ranging from shallow beaches to steep cliffs.

★ ''Alistia Ocean Laboratory''
A laboratory belonging to Daytron that is responsible for polluting much of the sea and almost wiping out the Mermels living in the area. Tony, Izel's brother, lives there.
Rose Nebula

Although it is not a planet, it is one of the places that may be visited by the player on the game map. It is considered one of the most beautiful places in the galaxy as its burning pink and rose-coloured clouds of gas appear to fall from a waterfall suspended in space. It is also the home to dangerous creatures that occasionally attack travelers.
Mariglenn

Officially called 'Le Marie Glennecia', this planet disappeared from the galaxy ten thousand years before the game's story starts. It used to be the most technologically advanced planet in the galaxy before Rune almost devastated it. Since it was sealed away in another dimension so long ago, many think it to be full of secrets and treasures which gave it the name "Eden".

★ 'Places'

★ ''Queen's Palace''
The Queen's Palace is the residence of Queen Freidias. When the beasts infected by the Rune attacked the city, she opened the palace as a refuge for the townspeople.

★ ''Ti'atha Forest''
A forest filled with gigantic trees and clear lakes that leads to the Gulza Sanctuary. Kisala's father, Albioth, can be found at the end of the forest.

★ ''Gulza Sanctuary''
The Gulza Sanctuary stretches a person to their emotional limits through means of illusions. It spread into eight paths at the plaza, one of which leads to Mother's Lair. The remaining seven paths is where the player can find Drigellums, manifestations of the energy of the heart. These are needed to forge the holy blade Zeo Sychros--the only sword that could harm Mother.

★ ''Mother's Lair''
A cave dotted with pools and rivers of Rune, filled with a horrible smell, too dark too see clearly, and is hard to breathe in.

Gameplay

The game's engine features a continuous environment with no load time and battles taking place in the overworld in real time. The graphics bear a resemblance to other Level-5 RPGs, most notably ''Dragon Quest VIII'' and ''Dark Chronicle'' (Dark Cloud 2).
Similar to ''Dark Chronicle'', the upgrade system consists of synthesizing new weapons by combining older ones to make new ones.
Combat

Battle screen from the U.S version of ''Rogue Galaxy''.

Combat is done much like that of ''Kingdom Hearts II'', ''Final Fantasy XII'', and ''Phantasy Star Universe'', in which the player fights enemies on the same playing field, thus having transitionless battles.
Some of the Combat's features are as follows;
;Tech Attacks: These are team based attacks in which two or more team members combine their abilities into one devastating attack. They are unlocked on the Revelation Flow for each character and are unique for each one with various requirements for who must be present within the active party to be enabled in combat (á la Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross).
;Burning Strike: In the Japanese release, these special attacks would occur at random, but this was changed in the U.S. release so that the player may activate them manually by collecting enough Burning Chips dropped by foes during combat to fill a special gauge. Once filled, the player may activate this ability at which point they must follow a series of prompts onscreen to string together attacks in order to generate a great deal of damage to a targeted enemy.
;Throwing Enemies: The player can throw an enemy into another enemy to cause damage. Various obstacles and items also appear within the combat area for the player to use in like fashion in most instances.
;Special Conditions: Several enemies are immune to damage unless made vulnerable through various means; some must first have their barriers destroyed by one of Jaster's guns. Others can only be harmed at very specific points to deliver any damage. Still others must have their guard broken through the use of a strong attack. Players must be aware of this, as such enemies are invulnerable to even the strongest attacks in the game until made otherwise.
Dungeon exploration

Keeping in tradition with Level-5's Dark Cloud/Dark Chronicle series, some areas contain puzzles. These can range from the mundane fetching of a key that matches the lock to more exotic ones, such as freezing a waterfall and then using created platforms in order to climb it.
Many of the puzzles encountered involve "Thinking Circles" - areas with a question mark where the player directs the characters, is informed of a situation there, and then attempts to select the right item from the inventory to address the situation. Doing so unlocks other parts of the dungeon, summons important bosses, and soforth.
Dungeons in Rogue Galaxy are notably long affairs, and may have odd and specialized enemies in them requiring the player to determine the best way to deal with them.
Insectron Tournament

The Insectron Tournament is a completely optional mini-game where the player pits up a team of his collected and trained bugs against opponents in a chess-like board, turn-based combat. Bugs can be acquired in each of the worlds by setting up traps and using food items as bait. Some are more powerful than others.
The Factory

At a certain point early in the game, the player's characters get access to a reconfigurable factory. They then are able to find blueprints by talking to others in the game (who have orange or blue icons over their heads). Using the blueprints, the player can set up factory equipment and raw materials to make new items. Upon completion of the item, the party gets a "sample" and the item will be available in some stores in the game.
The factory layout is essentially a 2D flow-puzzle where the player lays out equipment and conveyor belts, hooks up power cables, and attempts to make sure the right materials are processed properly, and combined at the right time in the manufacturing process. Consideration of the materials used, how they are processed, and the time it takes is required for success.
Weapon synthesis

Also following Level-5's tradition, Weapon Synthesis is the main course for acquiring powerful and effective weapons.
All weapons gain EXP from battles until they reach a level where they are "Maxed" and can be synthesized along with another similarly-developed weapon to create an even stronger one. This is accomplished by the use of "Toady", a strange froglike creature whose exposure to the mysterious substance Rune has given him the ability to swallow weapons and regurgitate a more advanced one. Toady can also analyze weapons and make suggestions for combinations, and will helpfully warn if a combination he's attempting to digest will give useless or negative results. He can only combine two weapons of the same kind.
After a weapon is "Maxed" on its experience, it continues to gain additional damage in specific "elemental" categories - fire, ice, wind, lightning, and holy. These can improve to a limited degree. When the experience and the elemental damage is at maximum, a weapon is considered "Mastered" and cannot be improved further. Improving these stats can mean a more powerful weapon is produced when Toady is used.
All playable characters possess two weapons: primary and secondary. Melee characters will have a close-range weapon set as primary, while long-range weapons will be their secondary. The opposite is true for Lilika. Combining weapons is no different among characters.

Localization improvements

Due to its success in Japan, Level-5 opted not only to localize ''Rogue Galaxy'' for North America and Europe, but to add a significant amount of new features and content, and address any complaints concerning the original version. These improvements, which feature in both the North American and European versions of the game, and the Japanese Director's Cut, include:[1]

★ The game now uses a dual-layer 8.5GB DVD to play instead of a standard 4.7GB DVD the Japanese version used. This allowed smoother, better looking graphics and additional data to be added into the game.

★ A fifth planet, the water world of Alistia; while separate from the main story arc, it includes its own sidequests and special items, and helps flesh out some of the characters. This world, however, is only available after obtaining a key item in Chapter 8.

★ Toady's Analysis of weapons has been changed. It became much simpler to use.

★ The Burning Strike system; players now collect Burning Chips during battle, allows them to store power and execute their Burning Strike when they wish to execute it.

★ The layout and visual design of several dungeons and planets has been altered and improved, making it more visually appealing. Rosencaster Prison, the Gladius Towers, the Daytron factory, Rosa's desert town, and Rosa's Labyrinth are all affected.

★ Additional content within the Insectron Tournament sidequest. Main difference is that two species of Insectrons, the Bomber Snail and the Spidan, have been added, each with 8 types of Insectrons per species.

★ More items have been added.

★ Each character (except Jaster) has two new types of weapons, thus increasing the number of weapons in the game by 140.

★ Each character has 5 bonus costumes, except for Kisala and Simon, who get 6. The difference in defense is small, but each character's clothing changes according to the costume they wear, even in cutscenes and in battle (except during the pre-rendered cinematics, and oddly enough, walking around the Dorganark).

★ Improved and expanded battle animations.

★ Over 2000 lines of additional voiced dialogue.

★ It's easier to damage enemies, as the formula for attacking has been modified.
