ROSEDALE, NORTH YORKSHIRE

'Rosedale' is a village located almost in the centre of the North York Moors national park. The nearest town is Pickering located some 10 miles to the south.
In days gone by Rosedale was a typical farming community that quickly became a centre for iron ore production in the 1800s, the last mine closing in 1926.
From time time onwards Rosedale went into somewhat of a decline, only to come back following increased private car ownership
Today Rosedale boasts 3 pubs and 2 shops. One of the shops is a farm shop but don't be mistaken into thinking that anything raw materials are produced in Rosedale save for wood, cows and sheep.
Sadly the cheapest house in Rosedale is 200,000 UK pounds and this means that local people are not able to afford property in the area. This is due to increasing house prices due to the national trend and the fact that second home ownership is on the increase. Before people would stay in a pub or bed and breakfast now they choose to buy a holiday cottage and thus increase the price forcing out the local residents.
Second home owners are likely to leave their homes unoccupied for long periods of time and on the whole spend little in the community.
Rosedale is a friendly village where a complete stranger can pass the night at the white horse farm hotel located up the bank in the village. There are rumours that this pub used to brothel frequented by mine workers in the 1800s.
Sadly Rosedale business would not exist if it were not for the tourists, there is little for local people, no post office or chemist. The businesses that are located in Rosedale are aimed at the tourist industry.
Save for unskilled work in Rosedale there are no jobs for people residing there. The National Parks usually refuse any development that would create jobs in the area. It is somewhat strange that the parks have chosen to cherry pick a moment in time that is rural when much of Rosedale's recent past centred around heavy industry.
