ROSEVILLE, CALIFORNIA


'Roseville' is a city in Placer County, California, located in the metropolitan area of Sacramento. As of January 1 2007 the population was 106,266. Interstate Highway 80 runs through Roseville and California Route 65 bisects the northern part of the city.

Geography


Roseville is located at (38.752434, -121.289338).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 79.0 km² (30.5 mi²). 78.9 km² (30.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.07%) is water. Several streams flow through Roseville, including Dry Creek, Linda Creek and Cirby Creek.l

Demographics


As of 2005, there were 103,845 people, 42,538 households, and 21,855 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,012.4/km² (2,622.5/mi²). There were 31,925 housing units at an average density of 404.4/km² (1,047.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 86.03% White, 1.31% African American, 0.70% Native American, 4.31% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 3.93% from other races, and 3.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.54% of the population.
There were 30,783 households out of which 35.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% were non-families. 23.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $57,637, and the median income for a family was $65,929. Males had a median income of $50,426 versus $35,494 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,021. About 3.4% of families and 4.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.
According to CNN Money's Best Places to live 2006 study, Roseville had the lowest average (24.5)Body Mass Index of any city in America making it the skinniest city in the country. In 2007 this number jumped to 26, there is no easy comparison to other cities as the skinniest places in the 2007 study is listed by county (Placer county did not make the list).

Transportation


Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, provides service to Roseville at the Roseville Amtrak Station. The city's passenger rail station is located at 201 Pacific Street in the heart of town. Amtrak Train 5, the westbound California Zephyr, is scheduled to depart Roseville at 1:35pm daily with service to Sacramento, Davis, Martinez, and Emeryville across the bay from San Francisco. Amtrak Train 6, the eastbound California Zephyr, is scheduled to depart Roseville at 11:40am daily with service to Colfax, Truckee, Reno, Sparks, Winnemucca, Elko, Salt Lake City, Provo, Helper, Green River, Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs, Denver, Omaha, Galesburg, and Chicago.
Amtrak's Capitol Corridor service includes the Roseville station as part of limited service between Colfax and San Jose, using the same tracks as the Amtrak 5.
Highway 65 has exits at Blue Oaks Boulevard, Pleasant Grove, and Stanford Ranch Road/Galleria Boulevard.
Highway 80 has exits at Riverside Avenue/Auburn Boulevard, Douglas Boulevard, Eureka Road, and Taylor Road.
Roseville Transit is a public transit service overseen by the City of Roseville and operated by MV Transportation. The system provides a total of 12 regular local routes, as well as the Roseville Transit Dial-A-Ride (DAR) and Roseville Transit Commuter service.

The Westfiled Galleria mall

Shopping plays a vital role in the economy of Roseville, which has the ninth highest retail sales of all California cities; Roseville is also the smallest of the fifteen top ranked cities in retail sales. Roseville is considered a regional shopping destination, with the Westfield Galleria at Roseville being the prime example. Westfield is currently embarking on a $250 million, expansion that will bring stores such as Apple Store, Burberry, Lacoste, Kate Spade, Juicy Couture, and The Cheesecake Factory. Traffic circulation will also be improved both on and outside the parking lot, including the Highway 65 interchange. The city recently was awarded the home to the Sacramento Capitals will play seven out of fourteen games at The Galleria, and the team will move from the parking lot of the Sunrise Mall.
Peter Bollinger Investment Company is building $80 million "The Fountains" across from the mall. It will bring Sacramento's first true "lifestyle" shopping center with stores such as Whole Foods, Orvis, Chico's, Coldwater Creek, DSW Shoes, Boudin Bakery, Z Gallerie, White House Black Market, Jos A. Banks, Sur La Table, Peet's Coffee, Anthropologie, Soma, Lucy, West Elm, Le Petit Chateau, Bellybou, Big Spoon Yogurt, and Right Start. Future phases also include additional offices and a hotel. Phase 1 will open in Spring 2008 and Phase 2 will open in 2009.

Current Projects


Revitalization

Roseville's Civic Center.

Beginning in the year 1988 the city embarked on a plan for redeveloping the downtown core comprising about of land.[1] Over the past years and into the future, the city is spending tens of millions of dollars on revitalizing its historic areas. The areas have been in decline for a long time. The city has already completed its Vernon Streetscape Project and is now working on its Historic District and Riverside Corridor Streetscape Projects. Also, the city has teamed up with Kobra Properties to develop a parking garage/office building/art gallery. It will house the new Roseville Arts! Blueline Gallery and will also provide the needed parking along with the new office workers. Completion of parking garage will be in October.

★ Hotel and Convention Center: Joint agreement with Kobra Properties to build a 10-story Embassy Suites and Convention Center. A future phase includes 2 restaurants, parking garage, and second hotel tower.

★ Highland Reserve South: Largest office park planned for city at 1.1 million square feet and 29 buildings. Plans include 2 six-story office buildings as well as a mix of 2 and 3-story buildings. Plans also include of retail.

★ University Park: office park with of retail.

★ Stone Point: Roughly mixed-use development which will include housing, shopping, and offices. It will include two 6-story office buildings, and three 5-story buildings (1 under construction, completion September). Retail includes Teaz Me, The Head Game, Pita Pit, Quizno's Subs, Costa Vida Mexican Grill, Ruby Tuesday, Utopia Grill, Blue Nami Grill, and Paul Martin's American Bistro (by Fleming's).

★ Diamond Creek Rezone: 28 acre mixed-use development which will include nearly 500 housing units and a mix of retail and offices. Plans for podium building go to the Planning Commission in November.

★ Roseville Crossing: center at Fairway and Blue Oaks consisting of Ethan Allen, Chili's (now open), La-Z-Boy, Upscale Gas Station/Mini-mart, SpringHill Suites, TownePlace Suites, 4 additional restaurants, and additional stores.

★ Plaza 41: center with Rite Aid and other shops.

★ Breton Village: of retail and 53 detached homes by Regis Corporation at Foothills and Pleasant Grove Blvds.

★ Cena di Mare: restaurant with patio. Restaurant is being developed by Kobra Culinary Concepts, a subsidiary of Kobra Properties, which developed the popular nearby Crush 29. The restaurant is unique by having not one straight wall, meaning that all walls will be curved somewhat. It will also include Bellagio-style fountains correographed to music, but on a smaller scale. Proposed opening Spring 2008.

★ Highland Plaza: Nugget anchored shopping center welcoming new tenants: Mary's Pizza Shack and Sunrise Natural Foods,

★ Highland Village: Roseville Pkwy and Gibson Drive, adjacent to Westfield Galleria at Roseville. Plans include: 2 hotels, 5 restaurants, 2 retail buildings, and a bank. Plans are for phases which will include civil construction in February of 2008, the retail/restaurant sites in spring of 2008 and the hotels following consecutively. Tenants have not been announced, but renderings show Hyatt Place on one of the hotels.

★ Woodcreek Village: Pleasant Grove & Woodcreek Oaks. Former Ralph's building to be replaced with Raley's.

Educational institutions


There are three higher education institutions in Roseville: Heald College, a non-profit business college with several locations throughout California, and Chapman University and University of Phoenix, for-profit colleges that specialize in adult education.
NCTI (Northern California Training Institute) provides medical training for fields such as Paramedic and Medical Dispatch.
There have been plans for a Sacramento State University satellite campus in the Roseville area which would eventually become CSU Placer Ranch. William Jessup University and Sierra College, a community college are located in neighboring Rocklin. Also, recently, Drexel University has announced their interest for a campus in the Roseville area.

Notable events



★ On April 28, 1973, 18 boxcars loaded with bombs en route to the Naval Weapons Station in Concord, CA began detonating in the Southern Pacific Railroad yard. More than 6000 bombs detonated for an unknown reason, injuring more than 350 people. The explosions caused damage to 5500 buildings up to away.[3] In the late 1990s, development in the area had uncovered more unexploded ordnance (presumably thrown from the explosion), which were safely contained and destroyed.
