Eight ships of the Royal Navy have been named 'HMS ''Royal George''' after various members of the House of Hanover.
★ The first ''Royal George'' was a 100-gun first-rate ship of the line launched as ''Royal James'' in 1675, and renamed in 1714.
★ The second ''Royal George'' was a 100-gun first-rate launched as ''Royal Charles'' in 1673 and renamed in 1715.
★ The third ''Royal George'' was a 100-gun first-rate ship of the line launched in 1756. She served in the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War and sank at Spithead in 1782 with the loss of 800 lives.
