The 'Royal Observatory, Edinburgh' (ROE) is located on Blackford Hill in the south of the city of Edinburgh. It started as the Playfair Observatory, located on Calton Hill, and became the Royal Observatory during the visit of George IV to Scotland in 1822. The observatory moved to its current location in 1896 following a gift of his library and instruments by the twenty-sixth Earl of Crawford. The original site on Calton Hill is now the City Observatory).
The ROE hosts the UK Astronomy Technology Centre which has built many state-of-the-art instruments for astronomical telescopes throughout the world, and in space. It also houses the Crawford Library, one of the most comprehensive collections of astronomical books and journals in the world. Also on the site is the Institute for Astronomy, part of the School of Physics at the University of Edinburgh.
