RUBIERA

'Rubiera' is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Reggio Emilia in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, located across the Via Emilia about 50 km northwest of Bologna and about 13 km southeast of Reggio Emilia.
Rubiera borders the following municipalities: Campogalliano, Casalgrande, Modena, Reggio Emilia, San Martino in Rio.

History

The original name of the city was ''Corte de Herberia'', probably deriving from the Celt ''er-beria'', meaning in the middle of the plain. The emperors Gallienus and Valerianus built here a bridge on the Secchia river in 259 AD.
The first mention of Rubiera is from 915, when it was a fief of the Supponidi, later followed by the Obertenghi. After a period of decline, it recovered some importance in the 12th century under the commune of Reggio Emilia for its strategic position, when it had a ''castrum'' (fortress) and massive walls. At a battle fought here in the May 1409 against the Visconti was killed Ottobono Terzi. Later it was an Este and Papal possession, and the part of the Duchy of Modena and Reggio, the castle used as prison.

Rubiera is the hometown of Stefano Baldini, European and Olimpic Marathon champion.
