RUSALOCHKA
"'Rusalochka'" (Русалочка) is an alternative adaptation of Andersen's tale (or most likely an older version based off the Slavic mythology of the Rusalka), "The Little Mermaid". It is a darkly romantic, haunting animated film reminiscent of a similar Russian fantasy cartoon, "The Magic Horse".
However, in this animated film, the mermaid does not have to give up her voice to the sea witch, but she does exchange her beautiful long hair for a pair of human legs. The mermaid (Marina) dies for the prince in the end. In order to return home to her family under the sea, she must kill the prince and let his blood fall on her feet.
She loves the prince so deeply that she cannot do this. Instead, she jumps into the sea and turns into sea foam.
A deeply moving story, this version of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid shows strong themes of identity and human relations that seem to have been ignored in more recent western renditions of the same story.
