History

SES Astra was formed in 1985 as Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), its first satellite entering service in 1989. In 1999 SES acquired a 34.1% in AsiaSat, followed in 2000 by the purchases of a 50% share in NSAB and 19.99% of StarOne.
In 2001 SES Global was formed by SES for the $4.3 billion acquisition of GE Americom, which was completed in November of that year. SES Global was established as the group management company on 9 November 2001; with the renamed SES Astra and SES Americom as subsidiaries. As a result of this transaction, SES Global's largest shareholder is GE Capital, with a 20% holding.
The company was renamed from 'SES Global' to 'SES' at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on 14 December 2006.
