Academic program

In the Upper School (Grades 9-12), SPA has a college-preparatory liberal arts curriculum.[2] The language department offers instruction in French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese (simplified characters) and has two-week long optional international exchange programs for students in grades 10-12 with partner schools in France, Germany, Spain, and China.
One of the main drawing features of SPA is its strong English department, which offers students strong individual attention, helping them to develop their analytical reading and writing skills. General courses are offered during freshman and sophomore years, while semester-long electives are offered during junior and senior years.
SPA's math department is also well-respected and offers Algebra II, Geometry/Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus I during freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years, respectively. Electives are available to seniors. Accelerated honors courses are also offered in each level, and a number of students also take university-level math courses through UMTYMP at the University of Minnesota. SPA also has a strong Math team, which has a long history of successes.
The science department at SPA offers Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics for freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years, respectively. As with math, accelerated honors courses are offered at each level. In senior year and for juniors who went on semester away, semester long electives are offered, these include: genetics, space science, marine biology, and field biology. The science department is extremely strong possesing two teachers with Ph.D's (one from MIT) and another two with masters. Many students also opt to participate in SPA's Science Olympiad team and/or Science Bowl team, both of which competed at national competitions in 2007.
For freshmen through junior year, the history department has required courses that include: World History I, World History II, and American History. In senior year, all history courses are elective based. Though the selections vary year to year an Honors World History Course and Honors US History Course are offered.
The music department touts two jazz bands, one orchestra, Senior Strings (a string ensemble), a large choir, and Summit Singers (a choral group). All of the music ensembles are well-respected, but no one is turned away from participation. The ensembles all offer a fall concert called Pops Concert where contemporary music is played as well as a spring concert where more traditional music is featured. SPA also hosts a free music competition every spring for singers and musicians from SPA and the surrounding area.
Each year, the school sends several juniors to semester-away programs including CITYterm in New York, Oxbow School in California, Maine Coast Semester in Maine, and Rocky Mountain Semester in Colorado.
SPA has a laptop program in its Middle and Upper Schools whereby the school provides each student in 7th grade with a notebook computer and students in grades 8 through 10 must purchase one from the school.[3]
One of SPA's unique feature is the Harkness tables, oval wooden tables that seat 12-15 students, that were integrated into most language, history, English, and some science classrooms beginning in 2005.[4]
Another SPA feature is the presence of senior speeches. All seniors are required to give a 5-8 minute speech in front of the entire school on a topic of their choosing. These typically run from the third week of September through the mid-April.
SPA also offers fencing, swimming & diving, soccer, track, football, volleyball, hockey, softball, and baseball.
The College Counseling Department at SPA works with students beginning at the end of their sophomore year to find good college matches, get good recommendations, write excellent essays, and apply to the schools they wish to get into. They also mediate the parent-student relationship during the application process to maximize the amount of choice, control, and success the student finds while addressing the parents concerns as well. Almost all SPA graduates go on to college, and many go on to make notable achievements in their fields.
