RAYMOND NONNATUS
(Redirected from Saint Raymond Nonnatus)
'Saint Raymond Nonnatus' (, ) (1204—1240) is a saint from Catalonia in Spain. His surname ''Nonnatus'' (Latin, "not born") is derived from the fact that he was born by Caesarean section (his mother died during childbirth). He is the patron saint of childbirth, midwives, children, and pregnant women.
Born at Portella, diocese of Urgel, he became a member of the Mercedarian Order, founded to ransom Christian captives of the Moors of North Africa, he was ordained priest in 1222 and later became master-general of the order. He traveled to North Africa and is said to have surrendered himself as a hostage when his money ran out.
He suffered in captivity. A legend states that the Moors bored a hole through his lips with a hot iron, and padlocked his mouth to prevent him from preaching. He was ransomed by his order and in 1239 returned to Spain.
Pope Gregory IX nominated him cardinal but on his way to Rome Nonnatus died at Cardona. Many miracles were attributed to him before and after his death.
Saint-Raymond, Quebec is named after him, as is San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, in Argentina.
His feast day was August 31. His cult was reduced to local status in 1969.
At the present time, with the opening of the discussion around the abortion issue in Latin American countries, the Church (the high clergy and the hierarchy) has emphasized and revalued the cult to this saint in a desperate intent to win a battle that has already lost in the main countries of the western world (ex: France) and that it has begun to lose in the American subcontinent (ex: Mexico and Colombia). The fact that a high percentage of the citizens from Latin America belongs to the cult Catholic Apostolic Roman it has transformed this region into a new battlefield where the Church tries to impose for the reason of the force a series of politicians that go against the laymaness of the State and that they are more characteristic of the Middle Ages that of the XXI Century in that we live. This way, the Church has been awarded the only voice authorized on the abortion issue in a deterioring of the opinions of the other non-Catholic , no-Christian and no-believers citizens, not tolerating the disagreement in a topic on which should prevail the health, the forecast and the public security of all the citizens and not the mean interests of a population's part.
