SANDS POINT, NEW YORK

'Sands Point' is a village located at the northernmost tip of the Cow Neck Peninsula on the North Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, New York. As of the United States 2000 Census, the village population was 2,786. 'The Incorporated Village of Sands Point' is in the Town of North Hempstead.
Sands Point is made up of turn-of-the-century mansions and sprawling 1960's ranches. Many properties are on waterfront with beautiful views of the New York City skyline and Long Island Sound. Others have private beach rights. Sands Point currently has the most expensive suburban real estate and the highest income per capita in New York state. It contains no commercial establishments. The village uses Port Washington's library, firehouse, water and schools, but maintains its own police force. It has no street lights, curbs, or rainwater basins. Only 25 minutes from Manhattan, Sands Point's proximity to Manhattan is ideal for highly paid commuters. The Port Washington Branch of the Long Island Rail Road offers a quick commute to the city.

History

The village was incorporated in 1910. In 1917, the village absorbed the communities of Barkers Point and Motts Point. It was originally owned by three families, the Sands, Vanderbilts and Cornwells. In 1910 Daniel Guggenheim bought his 216 acre Hempstead House, formerly Castle Gould. His son Harry Guggenheim, (founder of Newsday), later erected his estate Falaise nearby. Today, the estate is part of the Sand's Point Preserve, notable for a Renaissance fair held every September. In the 1960's under less strict building codes, some land was subdivided into 1 acre parcels. Current zoning allows subdivisions of 2 acres or more.

Geography

Sands Point is bordered almost entirely by water - Long Island Sound to the the north, Manhasset Bay to the west and Hempstead Harbor on the east. It shares land borders with the villages of Port Washington, Port Washington North, Manorhaven, and Soundview. Sands Point has many hills and beautiful waterfront cliffs.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 14.6 km² (5.6 mi²). 11.0 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²) of it (24.56%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2005, there were 2,845 people, 878 households, and 783 families residing in the village. The population density was 253.7/km² (657.5/mi²). There were 902 housing units at an average density of 82.1/km² (212.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 90.89% White, 1.2% African American, 7.8% Asian, .3% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 878 households out of which 40.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 82.3% were married couples living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 10.8% were non-families. 8.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.12 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the village the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.5 males.
The median income for a household in the village was in excess of $200,000, as is the median income for a family. Males had a median income of over $100,000 versus $60,938 for females. The per capita income for the village was $95,647. About 2.1% of families and 3.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.2% of those under age 18 and 3.6% of those age 65 or over.

The town and "The Great Gatsby"

In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Sands Point was referred to as "East Egg". East Egg residents inherited their fortunes and is considered more respected than newer "West Egg" (Great Neck/Kings Point) because Sands Point had "old money." The story's fictional Buchanans lived in the western part of Sands Point. Legend suggests that Fitzgerald who was often a guest at a mansion on Hoffstots Lane on Prospect Point in Sands Point used the site as his inspiration for the fictional Buchanan home in East Egg. The mansion and 13 acres of waterfront property is on the market for $28,000,000.
