Within a year after Newtown was settled, some of its proprietors began moving away from the central village to larger parcels. Several proprietors with land in the same area also moved out to reduce isolation. Sandy Hook was one of the first of the outlying areas settled. Colonists found that the Pootatuck River at Sandy Hook was a good location for saw and grist mills. The neighborhood would not grow dramatically until the industrialization of the mid 19th century.[1]Cruson, Daniel, "A Brief History of Newtown" Web page at Newtown Historical Society Web site, accessed March 28, 2007
