In 19th Century US political debate, the slave revolt in Haiti was often referred to as "The Santo Domingo Rebellion", and atrocities allegedly committed "at Santo Domingo" were frequntly cited by the advocates of slavery as justification for harsh measures such as the prohibition on teaching slaves to read and write in Southern states.
