SASSAFRAS, VICTORIA
'Sassafras' is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Sassafras was initially called Sassafras Gully, after the trees which grew in the area. The land was opened to small scale farming in 1893 and a small township developed. In the early 1900s tourism began to increase and the township consequently grew. The town is now home to numerous Devonshire tea outlets, antique shops, and nurseries. It is a popular destination for cyclists, who often make their way up Mountain Highway from The Basin.
