Placement
The number of students placed has increased dramatically over the years.
The college enjoys good reputation for its excellent placement track records.
By the end of every year the college almost rather always has a placement percentage of about 80% in various companies including MNCs with an average salary package of around 2.5 lacs p.a though the students can sit only in one company and they can not skip the companies, if they do they are not allowed to sit for other companies.
Thanks to the administration they do not charge for placement. e.g. In SRM University students are charged Rs.200 per placement form and VIT,Vellore charges 50% of the first salary in the offer letter.
Criticism
Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology has been severely criticized by former staff and students for the high handed approach by management in day-to-day activities. The institution is said to enforce a strict code of conduct among students and such rules attract parents who perceived rules such as the male-female segregation to provide "safer" and conducive environment for education (for their children). The following are only some of the rules listed in the college prospectus.
★ Girls and boys are not allowed to interact with each other in the campus.
★ Separate seating arrangements for girls and boys in the mess, class and bus.
★ Dress Code - For boys: Formals. Jeans and T-shirts not allowed. Girls: Full Saree/ 'Chudidhar with Dhupata in V shape'.
★ Students and staff are not allowed to commute to the college using their own transport. The Institution has 60 buses which are made available to the students and the staff members for commuting not only from various points in the city and also from the suburbs. Buses are operated with the policy of a seat for all (claimed by the college but actually always crowded and students have to stand and many times hang on the foot boards of the buses). Students are not permitted to use other transport facilities. Students aren't allowed to leave the campus except in a college bus.
★ Mobile phones/ Electronic equipments not allowed in college campus/hostel.
★ "Stylish" and "Fashionable" hair cuts, bracelets, hair colour, ear rings, awkward piercings, tattoos, French beards (or any beard for that matter) are not allowed.
★ Hostellites have a tough time for they are not allowed to go out of the campus for weeks .In case they escape the campus they are made to sleep on the basket-ball court. The hostel has television which showed once in a blue moon and only Sun News.
★ No radio/walkman or any electronic device in the hostel (There are no plug points to charge).
Only window to the outside world is the newspaper.
★ Situation has not changed much even after consistent strike by students
There have been several instances of the "disciplinary" rules being enforced outside the campus as well. Such a management attitude has resulted in students venting out their frustrations in blogs. [1]
