Prior to the crash
Sayid Jarrah served as a communications officer in the Iraqi Republican Guard. During the Gulf War (when Sayid was 23), Sayid's base is captured by the Americans. As the only Iraqi among his squad who speaks English, the Americans use Sayid to ask his superior officer, Tariq, about a missing U.S. pilot. After learning that Tariq ordered a sarin gas attack on his village, Sayid is given a box filled with torture tools by an American commander named Kelvin Joe Inman, which Sayid uses to successfully interrogate Tariq about the location of the pilot, who had been executed earlier. Tariq also taunts Sayid about dishonoring his father during this time, as his father was apparently an Iraqi war hero. During this time he came into contact with Kate Austen's father. As Inman leaves him, he pays Sayid ten American dollars for his service.
When the Gulf War ends with Saddam still in power, Sayid is released by the U.S. and goes back into the Iraqi Republican Guard. He swears he will never torture again. Under the rank ''mulazim awwal'' (equivalent of First Lieutenant), Sayid continues his military service using his knowledge of torture. However, his loyalty is shattered when he is ordered to torture his childhood friend, Nadia. When she is set to be executed, Sayid helps her to escape by killing his commanding officer and shooting himself in the leg to make it look like she escaped on her own.
Sometime after the Gulf War, Sayid leaves the Republican Guard and decides to track down Nadia. He moves to Paris and works as a chef under the assumed name Najif and tells people that he is Syrian, in an effort to hide his past as a torturer. Sayid is offered a position with higher pay at another restaurant by a fellow Iraqi named Sami, but when he arrives, he is taken prisoner by Sami and locked in a pantry. It turns out that Sayid was recognized - he once tortured Sami's wife, Amira, by pouring boiling oil on her arms. Sami beats Sayid to get him to confess what he did, but Sayid denies ever seeing Amira before. The next day, Amira meets with Sayid alone, explaining how he so negatively affected her life. Sayid finally admits torturing her and tearfully apologizes, but she forgives him, explaining that all people are capable of doing what he did, but she will never torture or witness torture after being put through it herself. She tells Sami that Sayid was not the man who tortured her and Sayid is presumably let go soon after.
An undetermined amount of time later, Sayid is picked up in England by members of ASIS and the CIA who have been following his movements. They offer him a deal: if Sayid can infiltrate a terrorist cell in Sydney whose members he is familiar with, and uncover 300 pounds (136 kg) of stolen C-4, then the intelligence agency will tell him where Nadia is.
Sayid is tasked with convincing Essam, his college roommate from Cairo University, to go through with being a suicide bomber so the intelligence officers can take possession of the missing explosives. Sayid warns Essam at the last moment to give him time to escape, but Essam becomes distraught that his supposed friend has deceived him over a woman, and kills himself. Sayid is released with a plane ticket to Los Angeles to look for Nadia, who they tell him is living in Irvine, but he asks for a flight for the next day, so that he can arrange a proper Muslim burial for Essam's body. He is then given a ticket on Oceanic flight 815.
Presumably the agents were telling the truth about Nadia's location, as she is later seen living in Los Angeles in one of John Locke's flashbacks.
In "Exodus: Part 1", Sayid asks Shannon Rutherford, who is preoccupied with a magazine, to watch his bag while he enters a store in the airport. However, Shannon turns him in to security, as proof to her brother that she can take care of herself.
After the crash
Season 1
Sayid is accused by Sawyer of being a terrorist and blames him for crashing the plane. Sayid fixes the transceiver recovered from the cockpit, and leads a group into the jungle in order to send out a distress signal. However, he instead picks up a looping message (recorded by Rousseau). Later, he, Kate and Boone try to triangulate the signal in order to locate it's origin. However, his efforts are thwarted by Locke, who knocks him out ("The Moth"). When Shannon suffers from a near-fatal asthma attack, Sayid brutally interrogates Sawyer in an attempt to recover Shannon's medication. Feeling extreme guilt, Sayid decides to leave the beach and explore the island ("Confidence Man"). On his way, he discovers a cable in the sand. Curious, he follows it inland, only to be captured and tortured by none other than Rousseau. He helps repair her music box, but manages to steal some maps from her before returning back to the beach ("Solitary").
Upon returning, he seeks Shannon's help with translating the maps. Upon doing so, the two bond and eventually form a relationship, much to Boone's resentment. He tells Sayid to stay away from her, but the two grow even closer together ("Hearts and Minds"). Sayid takes Shannon to an isolated part of the beach for a romantic night. Upon their return, Sayid and Shannon are informed of Boone's death ("Do No Harm"). Sayid is the only person to speak at Boone's funeral. Later, the relationship takes a turn for the worse after Sayid refuses to kill Locke, causing Shannon to seek revenge herself. He does, however, confront Locke over the hatch that he and Boone discovered in the jungle prior to his demise ("The Greater Good"). He then takes Jack to the hatch, and the three speculate how to enter.
Rousseau arrives on the beach one morning with news that the Others are coming to abduct a child. Sayid begins to lead a group into the caves when he is sidetracked by Rousseau. Shortly after, he learns that Claire's baby, Aaron, had been kidnapped by Rousseau. He and Charlie pursue her and eventually return Aaron to Claire ("Exodus").
Season 2
Sayid and Shannon's relationship seems to be back on track. However, when Shannon tells him that she has seen Walt in the jungle, he suggests she was having a dream ("Man of Science, Man of Faith"). Sayid is then called into the hatch after the computer is damaged. He manages to repair it successfully ("Orientation"). Days later, Sayid and Shannon decide to spend the night together when she again encounters Walt during his brief absence. Sensing she is still distraught, Sayid follows her into the jungle. After trying to reason with her, the two eventually see Walt. Sayid goes to follow, but trips. He then witness Ana Lucia shooting Shannon; she collapses in his arms and dies ("Abandoned"). Sayid becomes angry, but is knocked out and tied to a tree before he can react. He is later released, and forgives Ana Lucia for her mistake ("Collision").
He attempts to speak at Shannon's funeral, but is unable to finish his speech. Some time later, Ana Lucia brings Sayid into the jungle, where she has seen Rousseau. Rousseau takes Sayid to a man she caught in one of her traps, suspecting him of being an Other. Sayid takes the man, claiming to be called "Henry Gale", into the hatch, where he starts interrogating him. He eventually gives in after failing to extract satisfying information from him ("One of Them"). Later, he allows Mr. Eko to speak with him briefly. One day, while working on building a table for the beach with Charlie, Ana Lucia approaches him with a map to the alleged balloon that crashed in the jungle. The three head off into the jungle and eventually discover the balloon, along with a grave that matched Henry's description. Still not satisfied, Sayid digs up the grave and discovers that it is not Henry's wife that is buried - it is actually a man with an ID card, revealing that the dead body is the real Henry Gale ("Lockdown").
Sayid returns to the hatch and fiercely continues to interrogate him. However, Henry refuses to speak with anyone, causing Sayid to give up. He fixes a radio that Hurley brings him, and also suggests taking Libby on a picnic using the same beach he took Shannon ("Two for the Road"). When he learns of Michael's return, and the deaths of Ana Lucia and Libby, Sayid offers to help Michael with confronting the Others. However, Michael declines his offer, causing Sayid to grow suspicious. He tells Jack that he suspects Michael has been "compromised", and plans to follow somehow. Fortunately, Desmond unexpectedly returns with his boat, and Sayid plans on using it ("Three Minutes"). He asks Jin to accompany him, but Sun insists on joining them, knowing that Sayid would need her to translate for him. The three head off and follow Jack and the others by sea. On their journey, they pass a statue of a four-toed foot. They arrive at the Others' camp, and Sayid enters cautiously, only to learn that the camp is merely a decoy ("Live Together, Die Alone").
Season 3
Sayid is still sailing on board with Sun and Jin, who suggests turning back. However, Sayid and Sun disagree and they arrive at the dock. Sayid concocts a plan to ambush the Others and interrogate two of them. That night, while Sayid and Jin await their arrival, they discover that they have sneaked on board their boat, and attempt to chase after them. When Sun escapes the boat unharmed, Sayid apologizes to them, and they make their way home ("The Glass Ballerina"). Back at the beach, Sayid checks on the recovering Eko, when his tent suddenly catches fire. The next day, Sayid joins Locke, Desmond, Nikki and Paulo on a trek back to the Pearl station. Once inside, Sayid alters the wiring and makes contact with a different station; however, their efforts are in vain, as they are quickly cut off by a man in an eye-patch. As they leave, they witness the death of Eko ("The Cost of Living").
Sayid and Locke decide to inform Charlie and Hurley of Eko's death, but are distracted when Desmond dashes back to the beach and rescues a drowning Claire ("Flashes Before Your Eyes"). When Kate and Sawyer return to camp, Sayid and Locke are accused of not being interested in helping Jack. The two of them follow Kate into the jungle, where they meet Rousseau ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead"). They head off into the jungle, where they come across the hatch Sayid had previously made contact with. There, they encounter [[1]], claiming to be a member of the DHARMA Initiative, but Sayid learns that he is an Other. After a struggle with him and Miss Klugh, Sayid discovers that the hatch is rigged with C4. After taking some maps and blueprints, Sayid makes Mikhail their hostage and take him with them ("Enter 77"). They arrive at a sonar panel fence. When Locke pushes Mikhail through it, Sayid grows wary of his actions, and discovers that he took some of the C4. They cross the fence safely and arrive at the Others' real camp. Once there, they discover Jack socializing with the Others, much to their dismay ("Par Avion").
That night, Sayid and Kate infiltrate the base, but eventually wind up caught. Sayid is tied up in a playground and interrogated. He is visited by Alex, who takes his bag. He remarks that she looks like her mother, resulting in him being beaten into silence. The next day, Sayid is left tied up while the Others abandon their base. He is later released by Juliet, but is adamant not to take her back with them to the beach. His decision is overruled by Jack ("Left Behind"). On their way, he tries to question her, only to be cut off by Jack, and they return to the beach. The next day, Sayid and Sawyer follow Juliet to her medical stash, and attempt to interrogate her privately. However, Juliet talks them out of it, and they allow her to help Claire ("One of Us"). Hurley and Charlie approach Sayid days later, and inform him of the arrival of Naomi. He applauds their decision not to tell Jack, and begins interrogating her, only to be dumb-founded when she proves her innocence by giving him a satellite phone. He attempts to fix it, but the static alerts Kate. He tells her not to inform Jack ("The Brig").
Later, he is approached by Sawyer, who shows him Juliet's recorder. They approach her tent, only to learn that she and Jack have gone off. That night, Sayid encourages Naomi to tell her story, causing worry among the camp. However, when Jack and Juliet return after her recorder is played, he begins questioning them. They offer to explain themselves ("The Man Behind the Curtain"). They take Sayid and the rest of the group into the jungle, where they learn of a plan to rid themselves of the Others permanently. Sayid spots Karl running towards them, and he warns the beach of the Others' arrival that night. Realizing the dynamite isn't properly rigged to the tents yet, Sayid suggests staying behind and shooting it, along with Jin and Bernard ("Greatest Hits"). That night, Sayid and Bernard detonate their dynamite, but Jin's inaccuracy results in their kidnap. As they are about to be killed the next day, they are rescued by Hurley, Sawyer and Juliet. Sayid is currently safe on the beach ("Through the Looking Glass").
