History
Science Diet was developed in the 1960's by Mark L. Morris, Jr. PhD DVM (February 3, 1934 - January 14, 2007). Morris Jr. is son of famed veternarian Mark Morris Sr. DVM who pioneered the field of veterinary clinical nutrition when he was asked to create a specialized diet to assist a dog with kidney problems. This led him and his son to create numerous other formulas to meet the particular needs in an animal's nutrition over the course of their lives, and potential varying states of health under the Prescription Diet and Science Diet brands.
Current products produced under the Science Diet brand are: canned and dry dog and cat foods, including puppy and kitten formulas, as well as a range of formulas from hairball remedy, and sensitive stomach, to weight loss and dental care. They also have a line of pet treats, meant for dietary supplementation.
Questionable ingredients
Science Diet does use quality ingredients such as flaxseed, dried egg product, dried carrots, dried spinach, as well as minerals and vitamins. However it should be noted that Science Diet also uses chicken by-product meal, soybean meal, animal fat, brewers rice, vegetable oil, corn gluten meal, propyl gallate, ethoxyquin, BHT and BHA - ingredients not found in high quality foods.[1]
