SEACROFT

'Seacroft' is an outer-city council estate covering an extensive area of east Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.
The area's population is 18,000, and it is one of the largest council estates in the country, although it was originally developed as a village, and still has village status. Like many other areas of Leeds, however, it is looked upon as an estate rather than a village. The name is often used as a catch-all for Seacroft and the neighbouring areas of Whinmoor and Swarcliffe, other large east Leeds council estates which merge into each other.
Seacroft was at one time a small village between Leeds and York. The Village Green still exists, and is reported to be one of the oldest village greens in the country; it is mentioned in the Domesday Book. There is an old windmill on the estate, which has been incorporated into the Windmill Hotel, now known as the Ramada Leeds North.
Seacroft's previously run-down shopping centre has been demolished, and Tesco – the supermarket chain – built a ten-store 97,000 square foot superstore complex.
In 2006 one of the new "Super Academies" the government is launching opened in Seacroft named ''The David Young Community Academy'', after Archbishop David Young.
