SECOND DIVISION

In sport, the 'Second Division' is usually the second highest division of a league, and will often have promotion and relegation with divisions above and below. In some cases, the Second Division may no longer be the second highest division overall in that country, as new leagues can be created above, demoting the Second Division down a level.

★ Football League Second Division (renamed the Football League Championship in 2004; was actual second division until 1992 when it became third)

★ Isthmian League Second Division, England (at level 9 in the overall English football league system)

★ Scottish League Second Division (third division since 1975)

★ Belgian Second Division

★ USL Second Division, United States (third division)

★ Segunda División de La Liga, Spain

★ Second Bundesliga, Germany

The terms "First division" and "Second division" also have a history of usage in baseball, although the concept of promotion and relegation does not and never has existed in that sport, or in any of the popular team sports in the United States for that matter.
