SEEKONK RIVER

The 'Seekonk River' is a tidal extension of the Blackstone River in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. It flows approximately 8 km (5 mi). Most historical scholars agree that the name is derived from two Native American words, sucki (meaning black) and honc (meaning goose).

Course

The river begins in name at Pawtucket Falls, which serves as the boundary between fresh and salt water. From the falls, the river flows due south between Providence and East Providence, eventually feeding into the Providence River. The Seekonk River is the northernmost point of Narragansett Bay tidewater.
The upper Seekonk River, in the City of Pawtucket is known locally as the 'Pawtucket River'.
