Introduction
'Line 1' was the first metro line in Shanghai to be opened in 1995. It runs from Gongfu Xincun in the north, via Shanghai Railway Station to Xinzhuang in the south. This line added a very important transport method to the city, making transportation between home and work much more convenient for thousands of inhabitants of Shanghai.
The part running from Gongfu Xincun to Shanghai Railway Station was opened later, December 28 2004. This resulted in the metro line being extended by 12.4km. The line is now 28.8km long total.
This line covers many important points in Shanghai, and it is clear that the line was designed to do so. Of course because of the large amount of important locations all located on this one line it also means this line is extremely busy. It is the busiest lines of the metro system, and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future.
