SHANTALLOW

'Shantallow' (Gaelic ''old ground'') is an ancient townland now almost totally with the City of Derry and lies in the parish of Templemore, within the North-West Liberties of Londonderry.
The townland is no longer a visible feature of Derry, being mainly built over with 20th century housing estates, both public and private sector. The townland should not be confused with the Shantallow housing estate, affectionately known as 'Shanty', which was the first major housing estate built in the townland in the mid-1960s.
