SHOLAVANDAN

'Sholavandan' () is a panchayat town in Madurai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located at the bank of Vaigai River.It is one among the 12 "town- panchayats" of Madurai district.^[4]

Civic administration

The Chairman of the Town Panchayat is V. Ayyappan who won as an independent in the local body elections conducted in 2001. There are 18 wards as part of this Town Panchayat each represented by an elected member.^[6] Elected in the Tamil Nadu state assembly election, 2006, P. Moorthy of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam represents Sholavandan in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.^[7][8] Sholavandan assembly segment is part of Dindigul parliamentary constituency which is represented by N.S.V. Demographics

As of 2001 India census^[9], Sholavandan had a population of 21,661. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Sholavandan has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 65%. In Sholavandan, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
