Setting and Storylines

Setting

Shortland Street is mainly set in and around Shortland Street Hospital, a fictitious Auckland City public hospital (which had been a private clinic until 2001 when it was sold to the government by Dr Warner). The hospital gets it name from the fact it is located on Shortland Street in the fictitious suburb of Ferndale. The hospital also houses the Shortland Street Primary Care Clinic, and its own cafe.
There are several other locations, including The I.V., a bar and restaurant, located opposite the hospital; Sugar, a cafe located somewhere in Ferndale; and Ferndale High School, the local state secondary school.
The exterior views of the houses featured on the programme are located around the North Shore, West Auckland and Auckland City - the interiors are filmed on sets in the studio.
Camera angles suggest that Ferndale is somewhere on the North Shore looking towards the Sky Tower and port of Auckland.
Storylines

Main articles: Storylines of Shortland Street

Shortland Street has had some exciting and scandalous storylines over the years to keep viewers tuning in. Storylines are planned five months before they are due to be screened.
[2]
Recent significant storylines include the serial murder's of hospital receptionist Claire Solomon, nurse Meg Harris and bar owner Jay Copeland, and the on-going investigation. Toni Warner leaving for Australia with her son, brother-in-law and niece, after husband Chris cheats on her; and Maia and Mark's secret that Mark is the father to Maia's unborn baby.
Usually, Shortland Street has a high-paced action storyline in the last week before it takes a break over Christmas and New Year to keep viewers in suspense. However, this did not occur in 2006, due to the explosive Anthony Richard's scandal and Huia's death storylines in October.

Production

Shortland Street is produced by South Pacific Pictures, with assistance from FremantleMedia and Television New Zealand. In the first few years, the production was also assisted by New Zealand on Air.
Shortland Street is one of the fastest television dramas in the world.
Writing

Shortland Street is written by a team of writers. This team includes at least one medical advisor, for help with medical terms and procedures.
Every few months, the writers map out the storylines for the coming months. These storylines form the basis of the action on-screen.
With the amount of paper required, Shortland Street was once New Zealand's biggest paper user after the government. [2]
Filming

Today, most of the filming for Shortland Street occurs at South Pacific Pictures Waitakere City studios, with Ferndale High School scenes being filmed at the nearby Waitakere College. The exterior shots of the North Shore Hospital is Central Hospital which is the other hospital mentioned in the series as the place where patients are sent. Location scenes are usually filmed in Auckland, but other locations, including Fiji, have been used.
Originally, Shortland Street was filmed in North Shore City at South Pacific Pictures Browns Bay studios until their relocation to purpose built studios in Waitakere City in 2000. The original Ferndale High School was played by a North Shore college until the studio relocated.

History

''Æon Flux'', '' and ''The Ring'' are just some of the films ex-Shortland Street stars have been in.
The first episode screened at 7:00pm on Monday 25 May 1992, which included the now infamous line "You're not in Guatemala now, Dr. Ropata!"
The show was initially criticized and ratings dropped, but they picked up again and the show was kept on. It rates number one in the 18-49 group.
In 2001, the show had its biggest cast shake-up with 14 actors leaving, to be replaced by new ones. The (Dominic Thompson) storyline in 2003, which saw him murder two characters before dying himself in an explosion made the show one of the top 10 in New Zealand. More recently, Shortland Street celebrated its 15th birthday in May 2007. It had a nostalgic episode full of references to the past 15 years.
Shortland Street has always reflected the current trends in New Zealand health services.
