'Sierra Vista' is a city in Cochise County, Arizona, USA. According to 2005 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 41,908. Annual Estimates of the Population for All Incorporated Places in Arizona Fort Huachuca, a U.S. Army base, is located just northwest of the city.
Sierra Vista is located at (31.545498, -110.276500).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 397.5 km² (153.5 mi²). 397.5 km² (153.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. It is located 4,623 feet above sea level. The total area is 0.02% water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 37,775 people, 14,196 households, and 9,993 families residing in the city. The population density was 95.0/km² (246.1/mi²). There were 15,685 housing units at an average density of 39.5/km² (102.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 73.34% White, 15.81% Hispanic or Latino, 10.89% Black or African American, 3.57% Asian, 0.83% Native American and 0.46% Pacific Islander. 6.05% of the population is from other races, and 4.86% from two or more races.
There were 14,196 households out of which 34.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% were non-families. 25.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 13.0% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $38,427, and the median income for a family was $44,077. Males had a median income of $30,053 versus $23,805 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,436. About 8.0% of families and 10.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.8% of those under age 18 and 4.0% of those age 65 or over.
The city is adjacent to the Fort Huachuca Army Base, an active and historical military base and a communications and information technology hub.
Several mountain ranges surround the City of Sierra Vista. The city's name describes its location and at an elevation of 4,623 feet (1,409 meters), the city boasts a view of the Mule, Dragoon, Whetstone and Huachuca Mountains. As the population nears 42,000, Sierra Vista is one of the fastest growing communities in Arizona and is the business and cultural center of Cochise County. The city annexed Fort Huachuca into its boundaries in 1971. The two communities hold a strong working relationship and share many facilities and joint activities.
Sierra Vista was incorporated in 1956. The city is the shopping center for Cochise County and parts of northern Sonora. Located within the city is The Mall at Sierra Vista and several shopping centers. Many cultural and recreational activities are available within a short distance from the city.
Sierra Vista was the first city to have a McDonalds Drive thru. It first opened its window on January 24, 1975 to be able to quickly feed many of the soldiers coming from Fort Huachuca. The original McDonalds was closed down and demolished in May of 1999 and a new McDonalds replaced it, forever destroying the historic location.
Water has been a divisive issue in Southern Arizona, particularly in Sierra Vista. With the massive growth of the city, water, or lack thereof, has come to the forefront from opponents to growth. Many residents of Sierra Vista believe that the uncontrolled growth of the city will eventually dry up the San Pedro river that flows nearby, creating a dire lack of water. Growth proponents say that the city can grow tremendously with the water already available and that Sierra Vista could eventually transport Colorado river water through the C.A.P. system.
