DAVID YULE

Sir 'David Yule' (1858-1928) was a British businessman. Though born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he spent most of his life in India.
David Yule joined Andrew Yule and Company Ltd., which was begun by his uncle, Andrew. His uncle, George Yule, was a president of the Indian National Congress. Its business was to produce tea, jute and paper in India and export them to Britain. This is now a publicly traded company, with 97.46% ownership by the Government of India. His bother, Andrew, worked with him, until he was lost overboard on a voyage from Bombay in 1916. He left behind a wife and six children. His brother, William, died in India of cholera.
In 1919 David Yule and Thomas Sivewright Catto, 1st Baron Catto formed Yule Catto and Company Ltd, which is now known as Yule Catto & Co plc and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Among his other business interests were directorships of Midland Bank, Mercantile Bank of India, Vickers Ltd., the Royal Exchange Assurance Company and ownership of the ''Daily Chronicle'' newspaper.
In 1900 he married Annie Henrietta, eldest daughter of his uncle Andrew Yule of Calcutta, India. They had one child, a daughter called Gladys Yule (1903-1957)
He was knighted by King George V in India in 1911.
In 1925, he constructed Hanstead House in Bricket Wood, Hertfordshire. It is now a training facility for The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
