SMITH'S CREEK, MICHIGAN

'Smith's Creek, Michigan' is a rural city about 10 miles southwest of Port Huron and slightly west of Marysville. It has a population of about 8,623 in the downtown and surrounding areas. It is located in St. Clair County and has a ZIP code of 48074. Much of the city contains large residential properties as well as a few small farms.
The downtown area is situated on Henry Street and serves as the city's business sector. The City Township Hall, Fire Department, Smith's Creek Masonic Lodge, and a United States Government Post Office are located in this area. The street is also home to the city's mainstay businesses, such as the Ironhorse Country Store (formerly Hunter's General Store) and the quaint Pink Elephant Bar.
Railroad tracks were built through the city in 1858 by the Chicago, Detroit and Canada Grand Trunk Junction Rail Road Company. It was here that the Smith's Creek Depot, one of the few surviving depots built before the Civil War, was built. The depot is not in use today but serves as a tourist attraction.
A young Thomas Edison worked for the company as a newspaper distributor on the train. Edison set up a printing press in the baggage car to publish his own newspaper, The Grand Trunk Herald. It was at the Smith's Creek Depot that Edison was allegedly thrown off the train after setting the baggage car on fire with a stick of phosphorus.
