SOANYA AHMAD

'Soanya Ahmad' (1984 - ) is a principal participant of '', a contemplated one thousand day voyage which commenced on April 21, 2007 from Hoboken, New Jersey.[1] The mission has the aim of remaining in the open ocean, outside of contact with supporting ports, for a period of one thousand days, emulating in some respects interplanetary voyages such as those contemplated to the planet Mars. Ahmad is aboard the gaff rigged schooner ''Anne'' under the command of mariner Reid Stowe. Stowe and Ahmad constitute the entire crew of the ''Anne.'' [2]
Soanya Ahmad was born in Queens, New York City, the eldest child of native Guyanese parents. She earned a Bachelors of Arts degree from the City College of New York, concentrating in photography. Ahmad spent some time photographing black and white images and harborscapes of east coast ports, an endeavor that sparked a deeper interest in sailing. She enrolled at Kingsborough Community College to study Maritime Technology. Three years into her studies, Ahmad came in contact with Stowe's project. She has been affiliated with the Mars Ocean Project for three years before commencing on the voyage as Stowe's first mate and crew. Her responsibilities include documenting the voyage through photography and videotape and maintaining the ship's computers and communications equipment.2
