SOCIETY FOR THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF SEXUALITY
The 'Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality', formed in 1957, claims to be "the oldest organization of professionals interested in the study of sexuality in the United States." It claims to have some 900 members and has a quarterly newsletter, ''Sexual Science''. It produces two other publications:
★ ''Annual Review of Sex Research'', "''An Integrative and Interdisciplinary Review''"
★ ''Journal of Sex Research'', a scholarly journal published quarterly
In 1980, organizer Robert Francoeur invited Philadelphia biologist Timothy Perper, who had recently finished charting the mating behavior of five-hundred couples in bars in the U.S. and Canada as detailed in his 1985 book ''Sex Signals – the Biology of Love'', to join the society and that year he presented the early results of his findings to the society.
