SOOKIE STACKHOUSE
'Sookie Stackhouse' is the main character in ''The Southern Vampire Mysteries'' by Charlaine Harris. She is described as a blue eyed, buxom blond who loves to tan herself. Sookie is a telepath, and the series is a first person account of her life in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana.
She recently found out that she is part fairy, which explains her attractiveness to the supernatural.

Early life
Sookie was the youngest of two children. Her parents died when she was a young child, leaving her and her older brother Jason to be raised by her grandmother. Jason has no problems getting a date and was intentionally bitten by a werepanther for the purpose to turning him into one. He has since married a full blooded werepanther named Crystal from a community called "Hotshot". They are currently expecting a baby.
Her psychic powers manifested as a child, and it is indicated in the books that her parents thought they may have been mental illness. She was treated as such. They subjected her to a battery of tests through many doctors. However, Sookie does tell of one point when her father asked her to "listen" in on a business meeting to discern the true intentions of another person. She told her father the man was intending to take his money and run.
She was also sexually molested as a child by her great uncle. Her parents never believed her accusations against him, but, after their death, Sookie's grandmother realized his threat to Sookie and prevented further contact between him and Sookie. It is implied that he molested her cousin Hadley more extensively than her. When Bill Compton learns of this, he arranges the death of this "funny uncle." Jason, Sookie's brother, was not molested, and was upset by his death. Sookie felt freedom.
At some point, a small amount of oil is discovered on her family's lands giving her grandmother enough money to support the family, but they were always far from affluent. In fact, Sookie's financial struggles are a frequent theme in the books and one of the main reasons she continues to help the vampires. She currently works as a barmaid and thoroughly enjoys this job. Sam Merlotte, her boss (and a shapeshifter who prefers shifting into a Collie that Sookie named Dean) seems to really like her and to support her in almost all things.
Sookie has a number of faithful friends, including but not limited to a witch roommate, Amelia, her transformed into a cat lover named Bob, Sam her boss, Pam the vampire and a number of other people. She has come to have most of these friends only since meeting Bill, which is the origination of the series.
She never received any education beyond high school but has always been well read and generally pretty knowledgeable on many diverse subjects. She always receives a word of the day calendar for Christmas, and references it frequently.
The books give the impression that her early years were generally miserable as she coped with her developing powers, her parents deaths and her uncle's abuse.
