'Sounder commuter rail' is a Regional rail service operated by Sound Transit. Service operates Monday through Friday during peak hours from Seattle, Washington, north to Everett and south to Tacoma. Additional Sounder trains operate on some Saturdays and Sundays for travel to and from Seahawks games at Qwest Field and Mariners games at Safeco Field. Both stadiums are a short walk from King Street Station.
The 35-mile Everett to Seattle line started with a Seahawks Game train on December 21, 2003. Regular service started on the 22nd with one morning train to Seattle and one evening train back. A second roundtrip train was added on June 6, 2005 to help increase ridership. By the end of the year, ridership on the North Line had more than doubled to 700 boardings a day. There are currently two stops along the North Line: Edmonds and Everett. In 2008, Sound Transit will open up the Mukilteo station. [1] (This was originally planned to open in 2007 [2] but has been somewhat delayed. )
By 2010, Sound Transit plans to have 4 Sounder roundtrip trains on the North Line, down from the initial 6 they projected in 1996.
In 2005, the operating cost per passenger was over $30 on the north line, excluding capital costs. The average week-day ridership for the 3rd quarter of 2006 on the North Line was 658 passengers. [3]
The South Line began service with two roundtrip trains on September 18, 2000 with stops in Tacoma, Sumner and Auburn that terminated in Seattle. Puyallup and Kent stations were added February 5, 2001; with Tukwila being added March 12, 2001. There are currently 7 stations on the South Line. Sound Transit is extending service farther south to South Tacoma and Lakewood with service being expected to begin post-2008.
A third roundtrip train was added on the South Line on September 30, 2002 and a fourth on September 26, 2005 to handle ridership growth. Two roundtrip trains will also be added in September 2007 with one of them being a Seattle to Tacoma reverse commute. Sound Transit plans to have a total of 9 roundtrip trains on the South Line by 2010. The average week-day ridership for the 3rd quarter of 2006 on the South Line was 5,200. Sound Transit projects that ridership on the South Line will meet its goal of over 10,000 daily riders in the coming decade.
